The Organic Prepper

Sometimes I think that the next Revolutionary War will take place in vegetable garden battlefields, all across America.

Instead of bullets, there will be seeds.  Instead of chemical warfare, there will be rainwater, carefully collected from the gutters of the house. Instead of soldiers in body armor and helmets, there will be backyard guerrillas, with bare feet, cut-off jean shorts, and wide-brimmed hats.  Instead of death, there will be life, sustained by a harvest of home-grown produce.  Children will be witness to these battles, but instead of being traumatized, they will be happy, grimy, and healthy, as they learn about the miracles that take place in a little plot of land or pot of dirt.   Continue reading “Fight Dirty: How to Become a Backyard Garden Guerrilla Even If You’ve Never Grown a Tomato”

Growing your own is under threat, particularly with moves to criminalize seed sharing within communities and seed libraries.

The powers that be would love for people to simply stop growing their own food crops, and in particular from growing any viable self-sustaining communities.

John Kohler of the popular Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens You Tube channel, interviews some key figures about the mounting issue of targeting small scale seed libraries by demonizing them and what they represent.   Continue reading “Community Seed Sharing Increasingly Branded as ‘Illegal’”

apples GMO DARK ActNutritional Anarchy – by Lisa Egan

Polls have shown time and again that the overwhelming majority of Americans want GMO labeling on food.

Despite that, two Congressmen – who are supposed to represent the people – want to make the labeling of genetically modified foods voluntary.   Continue reading “GMO Labeling: Will Congress Keep Us in the DARK?”

You can have enough food to ride out 15 years of Armageddon. You can have a fully stocked retreat or a bunker. You can have so much ammo stashed that your floorboards are groaning.  You may have followed your favorite preparedness book’s guidelines to the letter, and thus have all of the physical aspects of survival in place.

But regardless of this, you may not be fully prepared.   Continue reading “How to Survive Anything in 3 Easy Steps”

McFashionNutritional Anarchy – by Lisa Egan

If you live in Sweden, this is your lucky day!

Everybody’s favorite fast food leviathan is spreading its tentacles out of the garbage grub industry and into new territory. Alas, Swedes are the only ones who can get the goods right now.

Earlier this week, McDonald’s launched an online boutique featuring bed sheets, wallpaper, raincoats, rubber rain boots, a jacket for dogs, and (my personal favorite) thermal underwear emblazoned with Big Macs.   Continue reading “McFashion: We’re Not Lovin’ It”

Have a Nice Big Glass of Round-up with this Monsanto LobbyistNutritional Anarchy

You all know that we here at Nutritional Anarchy are adamantly opposed to toxic farming methods like the use of Round-Up killer.

But little did we know that it is apparently so safe you could drink an entire quart of it and live to tell the tale. Apparently according to a former Greenpeace-activist-turned-Monsanto-lobbyist (there’s gotta be a heck of a story in how that particular occupational transition occurred), it wouldn’t hurt you at all. (You can read Patrick Moore’s bio HERE, and wonder with us exactly how much it costs Monsanto to buy themselves their very own environmentalist.)   Continue reading “Mmmm…Have a Nice Big Glass of Round-up with this Monsanto Lobbyist…Oh…Wait”

I know it isn’t just me.

Every prepper I know loves a good disaster flick.  Heck, it doesn’t even have to be that good for some of us to watch them.  We just enjoy sitting back and watching a fictional disaster unfold so that we can strategize how we would handle it, mock the hero for his or her poor decisions (you know, those dumb moves that a prepper would never make), and feel absolutely justified with regard to our lifestyle choices.  A movie is like the prepper version of a sporting event, where we can cheer, jeer, and scheme our ways through some imagined event. It engages our love for critical thinking while allowing us to take a break from our everyday activities.   Continue reading “40 Flicks for Prepper Movie Night”

Amy’s Kitchen, the go-to processed food for organic lovers, has issued a voluntary recall on a large number of products today, due to concerns about spinach that may contaminated with listeria.

According to an FDA press release:   Continue reading “Yet Another Processed Food Recall: Amy’s Kitchen”

GMO apples and potatoes approvedNutritional Anarchy

The genetically modified obstacle course in the produce section is about to get some new hurdles

Our good friends at the FDA, always-kissing-corporate-butt  always vigilant, have deemed GMO apples and potatoes to be a safe, even beneficial, part of the food supply. Warning: I cringe over the fact that most of this article sounds like something from the Onion or another snarky satire website. The quotes below don’t even sound real, but all came straight from an AP report.   Continue reading “Not Satire: The FDA Approves GMO Apples and Potatoes, Touts Health Benefits”

Do you enjoy saving a buck more than most people?  Do you have a black belt in frugality? Here are 20 surefire signs that you are embracing your cheap side.  How many things on this list apply to you?

  1. You take it as a personal challenge to see how long you can go without spending money. The game is even better if you have a spouse or friend with whom you can compete.
  2. You don’t let food go to waste. You have an ice cream tub in your freezer nearly full of odd bits of leftovers, awaiting their reincarnation into “leftover casserole” or “leftover soup”.

It looks like we’re gearing up for Round 2 of Ebola Roulette.

A couple of days ago an American healthcare worker who had been definitively diagnosed with Ebola was brought back to the US for treatment at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.  Eleven more patients have been isolated and are on their way to the United States as well, after having had  “potential exposure” to the disease.   Continue reading “11 People with “Potential Exposure” to Ebola Being Brought to American…ummm…Hotels???”

What I know when I eat locallyNutritional Anarchy

The other day, I was cleaning out my freezer and something magical happened. Not only did I get a nice, organized freezer, but I realized what it really means to eat locally.

When you eat locally, you know things about your food that people who shop at the grocery store do not.

On the labels of nearly every package of meat in my freezer was the name of someone I know….whose farm I’ve actually been to.   Continue reading “What I Know When I Eat Locally”

If you read between the lines on a recent report from American Express, it looks like more Americans are veering away from the traditional bank savings accounts:

A majority consumers say they’ll keep their savings at a local bank (57% vs. 55% in 2014) but more than half of those who keep their savings in cash plan to hide bills in a secret location at home (53%).

We are living through a time that will go down in the history books as one of epic economic turmoil. Instead of three economic groups (Rich, Middle Class, and Poor) we are quickly dividing into two groups: richer and poorer. If you dutifully go to work and punch the clock, then come home and pay your bills, you’ll end up with little to show for it but indentured servitude to “the system.”  If your kids go into debt to attend college, they will very likely come out unable to find a job that will allow them to do more than pay off their student loans. “Success” is becoming as ephemeral as fog for people those who play the game of life by the former rules.  It’s time to change your strategy to emphasize creating cash flow over savings if you want to weather this crisis.   Continue reading “Rich Dad: How to Create Financial Freedom in a World That Would Make You a Debt Slave”

Maybe you’re brand new to prepping and not sure where to start. Maybe you aren’t really interested in emergency preparedness but your well-meaning in-laws keep sending you links to websites about the topic.  Maybe you go to those websites and you see so much doom and gloom that you immediately exit. Maybe you say to yourself, “Holy cow, no!  I’m not one of those crazy Doomsday Preppers!”  (Maybe you’re the in-law sending the articles!)

If any of the above apply, then this post is for you.  It’s chock-full of links, supplies, resources, and information for those who are new to preparedness that may not be ready to dive in 100% just yet.   Continue reading “3 Types of Emergencies That Could Happen to Anyone”

It’s time for an intervention. We need to talk.

Are you concerned about the stuff they call “food” at the grocery store?  Do you opt for whole foods most of the time, and feel unwell if you eat so-called “junk food”?  Are your views about food causing you to make changes in your day-to-day life? Do you believe there is a connection between the food you eat and your physical and mental well-being??

Then, it’s time to face reality.  If you choose to eat food without chemicals on a regular basis, you, my friend, are mentally ill.   Continue reading “Is Opting Out of Processed Food the New Eating Disorder?”

There’s a big movement towards frugality afoot these days. It probably has something to do with our declining economy, record unemployment levels, and the increasing price of food, but only the wisest families are paying attention to these things. The rest of the folks are blithely going on as they always have, wondering why on earth they keep spending more money each week at the store.

If you are just beginning to move towards a thriftier lifestyle, you might be looking at the big picture.  You could be asking yourself things like, “How can I save money on my car?” or “How can I pay less for that new laptop?”  These are all fine things to do – paying less is great, but shopping for a bargain is actually not the key to a frugal lifestyle.   Continue reading “The 10 Daily Habits of Frugal People”

One of the most common reasons that people give for not prepping is the cost involved.  People seem to have this mental image of a bedroom or basement dedicated to being filled to the rafters with cans of Chef-Boy-Ardee.  They imagine someone going out and spending $5000 at a time for a year’s worth of food, or perhaps an 18-wheeler backing up into their driveway and unloading the contents with a forklift.

It’s time to learn a whole new way to shop. Thrift is of the utmost importance if you want to be able to afford to build your pantry quickly.   Continue reading “Build a Pantry for Pennies: 5 Frugal Shopping Strategies”

There is an almost epidemic hierarchy of wheat-related ailments in America today. From intolerance that causes gastrointestinal discomfort to a debilitating disease, the number of people who do not consume wheat is multiplying exponentially.

At the pinnacle of this is Celiac disease. Sufferers are highly sensitive to gluten in any form. The Celiac Disease Foundation defines this:   Continue reading “How to Build a Gluten-Free Pantry on a Budget”
