Finally, it seems like we have the attention of some of the members of Congress.  As the result of an enormous outcry, the Senate voted down the rider that was recently approved by the House of Representatives.  The rider would have continued Big Biotech’s immunity against prosecution resulting from their toxic farming practices and questionable crops.

As of September 30th, the so-called Monsanto Protection Act will be dead.  This is a major victory for anti-GMO activists as it is the first time that Congress has decided in favor of the constituents as opposed to companies like Monsanto, Sygenta, Bayer, and Dow.   Continue reading “The People Triumph Over Biotech: Monsanto Protection Act Defeated in Senate”

Are you ready for total grid failureThe Organic Prepper

If you haven’t been in a bubble cut off from all forms of media lately, it would be impossible to have missed all of the warnings being issued about the impending loss of our electrical grid.

This isn’t just coming from so-called “gloom and doom” sites or from alternative media.  Major mainstream media sources such as ABC News, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and CBS News have all issued the alerts. Unfortunately, the hordes seem to be brushing these warnings off as something that cannot happen, because the reality is too unpleasant to even contemplate.  Many seem to think that they are far better to stick their heads in the sand and be assured it can never happen than to prepare ahead of time.   Continue reading “You’ve Been Warned: Why You Need to Be Ready for Total Grid Failure”

The  FY14 Continuing Resolution (CR) spending bill  is soon to be on the table in the Senate, and hidden in this bill is a continuance of the controversial “Monsanto Protection Act” that was passed 6 months ago (HR 933) amidst enormous public outcry.

It probably won’t come as much of a surprise that the mainstream media is providing disinformation regarding this bill – after all – look at their advertisers. It’s just good business for them to go with the flow on this. According to mainstream sources, this is being presented as a done deal, when in fact, it has only passed the House and must still go before both the Senate and the President.   Continue reading “Untouchable: Government Gives Monsanto the Go-Ahead to Kill You and Your Family”

root cellarThe Organic Prepper

In our agrarian past, we didn’t have  a grocery store in every town receiving shipments of fresh fruits and vegetables from all corners of the world on a daily basis.  Food preservation was a necessity to survive the long winter in most locations.  Over the centuries, many have gotten their winter produce fix from a simple non-tech solution:  the root cellar.

Last year when I did my One-Month Stockpile Challenge, I realized that this was a glaring omission in my food stockpile process, so this year, I’m determined to add this strategy to take my stockpile to the next level.  Fall is the perfect time to begin because for the next few months, those hard-shelled root vegetables as well as items like apples and potatoes, will be abundant and cheap.   Continue reading “How to Create a Root Cellar for Food Storage”

“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”  ~ George Orwell

I was recently doing some research about the aftermath of some natural disasters that took place here in America. I was shocked to find that the articles I was looking for – ones that I had read in the past – were pretty hard to find, but articles refuting the sought-for pieces were rampant.  Not just one event, but every single crisis aftermath that I looked up, had articles that were written after the fact stating in no uncertain terms that the hunger, chaos, and unrest never happened.   Continue reading “The Disaster Myth Narrative: No One Panics, No One Loots, No One Goes Hungry”

The Pantry Primer adding larger purchasesThe Organic Prepper

Weekly grocery shopping is not the way to quickly build  one-year food supply.  But now that I have built a base, over the past two weeks I was able to easily skip the weekly trips and save up for a larger purchase.

To be able to afford large purchases when you are on a regular, week-to-week budget, you have to figure out a strategy. For me, that is the best way to save up for bigger purchases – skip a week of shopping and then add the budgets of the two weeks together in order to  make some bulk purchases that I ordinarily couldn’t swing along with a week of regular grocery shopping.  Other strategies could include:   Continue reading “The Pantry Primer: Adding Larger Purchases to Your Stockpile”

worst book everThe Organic Prepper

I am often asked to read and review books in the preparedness and health genres. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can organize information and put together an informative and/or entertaining manuscript, and because of this, I can find something positive in any text.  I am honest, and I point out the places where I feel things might need to be expanded, but I also look for positives and present those too.

I had never written a totally negative book review in my life, but that was before I read The Prepper’s Cookbook:  Essential Prepping Foods and Recipes to Deliciously Survive Any Disaster.

Don’t waste your money on this cheap hack.   Continue reading “The Worst Book Review You’ll Ever Read”

The USDA has just approved a new generation of GMOs for use with more deadly herbicides than the toxic glyphosate that currently taints farms across America.

You won’t hear about this on the mainstream though – it was all done very quietly in the hopes that no one would notice.

Bayer has developed a soybean that can withstand applications of the toxin isoxaflutole (IFT).   Continue reading “Move Over, Round-up: USDA Approves 2nd Generation GMOs That Can Withstand Even Deadlier Herbicide”

I have been able to speak to a co-worker of Bashar al-Assad. Assad is a doctor by trade and spent time working in London. A nurse who worked with him routinely has agreed to have her memories and thoughts made public on the condition of anonymity.

“In 1992 I had just qualified as a nurse and was working at the Western Eye Hospital in London when I first met Bashar. He was very quiet and polite with the staff which to be honest was quite unusual. Many Middle Eastern doctors were quite brusque in the way they addressed the female members of staff. He had a very ready smile and never mentioned his connection to the then President of Syria, his father.   Continue reading “I Knew Him Once: “Seeing all that’s happening in Syria, it doesn’t equate to the Bashar al-Assad I knew””

What is the best way to change public perceptions on any topic?

Through entertainment.

The battle to control us through changing (or creating) our opinions is as old as history.  Carefully disseminated disinformation was first documented in ancient Greece, when playwrights and poets created dramas for the sole purpose of indoctrinating their audience to a certain set of morals, standards, and beliefs.  When creating his empire, Macedonian king Alexander the Great inundated the places he conquered with his image, on the coins, adorning building, and in the form of statues.  Grand stories were written and shared about his generosity and the legends that were created on his behalf to this day make him larger than life.   Continue reading “Biotech’s Next Line of Defense: Cartoons Are Used to Program Kids to Accept GMOs”

UPDATE: I’m delighted to follow up on this morning’s article. I received an email in reply from the principal at my daughter’s school. He stated that after reading my strong feelings about the matter, he can assure me the practice will no longer be continued at the school. Resistance works.

Making Meals from Pantry BasicsThe Organic Prepper

Your pantry is only useful if you can make tasty, filling meals from it.  It is vital that you purchase “ingredients” rather than meals, so that you can make a wide variety of foods. Not only is this healthier, but it is also a much more cost-effective way to build a stockpile.

The ingredients that you buy or preserve are the basis of your future health should a situation arise in which you must rely on your pantry.  It is imperative that you have the ability to cook from scratch if you intend to use a pantry full of ingredients, so brush up on your skills by using these items now, and not just storing them away.   Continue reading “The Pantry Primer: Making Meals from Pantry Basics”

This week, I’ve expanded beyond “groceries” – the week to week purchases that are made with meals in mind – and made some bulk purchases that have substantially added to my food supply.  Because the last week’s shopping left some food for this week’s eating, I was able to focus more on storage food and basics than on items for immediate consumption. 65 pounds of fruit purchased from a local orchard have provided a great bounty for canning and some sale meat purchases have filled my freezer.

When I received an unexpected $50 this week, I was delighted to put it right into building my food pantry.  This little windfall allowed me to make some purchases that would not have been in the budget otherwise. I was also able to supplement my grocery budget by attending a garden swap and exchanging some home canned goods for lovely excess produce grown by local vegetable gardeners.   Continue reading “The Pantry Primer: Expanding Beyond “Groceries””

Nothing says summer like taking nibble from a peach, still warm from the sun, that is so juicy it runs down your chin when you bite into it.  If you aren’t lucky enough to have a tree in your own back yard, the farmer’s markets are bursting with peaches this time of year.  (Find a local farmer’s market HERE).

Peach trivia: Peaches were first cultivated in China, where their consumption was documented as early as the 10th century.  Peaches were planted in North America in the 17th century, but not grown commercially until the 19th century. Peaches are a member of the rose family. There are over 200 varieties of peaches.   Continue reading “This Week’s Harvest: Peaches”

One in 7 Americans receives food stamps and the government wants the number to be even higher.

Yes, I said higher.

The USDA is soliciting people to receive food stamps in the manner of a drug dealer on a grade school playground.  ”Psst – hey you!  I’ve got something for you…it’s free…come on, try it.  You’ll like it!”   Continue reading “The USDA Is Pushing Food Stamps Like a Drug Dealer at a Grade School”

If you wanted to reach an audience of smart, hip young people, how would you do it? If you wanted to convince the young, energetic idealists that something was a good idea, how would you target them?

One way to reach such a group would be through a fast-paced funny bit of “light entertainment” geared towards a slightly geeky, intelligent, and witty teen and young adult audience.  A simple animated television program.   Continue reading “Futurama Pimps Out Young Audience to Monsanto”

The lower your income is, the more difficult it is to be particular about what you feed your family.

This probably isn’t an earth-shattering revelation to anyone, but if you feel like experimenting, try to buy a week’s worth of healthy food for a family on a budget of, say, $50-75.  Food manufacturers that target lower income shoppers with more affordable products tend to include more GMOs and toxic ingredients in their offerings.   Continue reading “What to Eat When You’re Broke”

Back to school time means there won’t be any more daily cries of, “I’m booooooored!”  It means the end of those impromptu trips to the beach or the pool. It means that your house will be a little tidier, you will get a little more done, and your kids will get to see friends that they haven’t seen since the school doors closed at the beginning of the summer.

It also means that it’s time for mom and dad to spend some money.   Continue reading “Back to School on a Budget”
