WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. budget deal adopted by Congress on Friday includes what advocates call a landmark compromise to provide an estimated $1.5 billion over 10 years to try to keep struggling families together, including those with babies born dependent on opioids.

The provision allows assistance on mental health, substance abuse and parenting whenever any child is deemed at imminent risk of entering foster care. It also offers support for relatives who unexpectedly assume responsibility for a child when a parent cannot.   Continue reading “U.S. budget deals grants $1.5 billion for opioid-addicted babies, families”

A California court has ruled that a Christian baker cannot be forced to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple because it would violate her First Amendment rights — a decision that runs against a national trend of cases now before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kern County Superior Court Judge David Lampe ruled Monday that it would have been impermissible for baker Cathy Miller, who operates the Tastries Bakery in Bakersfield, to refuse to sell a cake that was already made to a same-sex couple. However, forcing her to bake a new cake would have been an impermissible form of coercion, he ruled.  Continue reading “California Court Allows Bakersfield Baker to Refuse to Bake Cake for Lesbian Wedding”

The US-led coalition’s attack on pro-government forces in Syria has again proven that Washington’s true goal is to capture “economic assets” instead of fighting terrorism, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The MoD was referring to an incident which took place on Tuesday in Deir Ez-Zor province, as a Syrian militia unit was moving against a “sleeper cell” of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). The operation was prompted by a surge in shelling of the positions of Syrian government forces in the area over the past few days, attributed to the covert activities of IS terrorists, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.   Continue reading “True US goal in Syria is control over resources, not fighting ISIS – Russian MoD”

At the request of an Oklahoma court, a mother of seven has been sterilized as part of a judge’s order, setting a damning precedent in the process.

Summer Thyme Creel, 34, had the procedure in November after the judge wrote he could consider it at her sentencing if she chose to do so.

Although the procedure was “voluntary,” the court order to do so crosses some ominous barriers. In spite of the fact that it is described as “voluntary,” it stretches the definition of that term by putting Creel in the position of bartering her fertility for leniency in her sentencing.   Continue reading “Disturbing Precedent: Mother Sterilized As Court Hands Down Order Recommending It”

Documents that have come to light recently show that Monsanto continued to make and sell polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for eight years after they knew that they were hazardous to the environment and human health.

The firm was already exposed for this practice when internal documents were digitized and posted as part of the Poison Papers Project, but notes from a Monsanto meeting that were recently posted on Toxicdocs show just how callous they were about the matter.  Continue reading “Incriminating Documents Reveal Monsanto Knew They Were Poisoning The Environment With Their PCBs”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) – California will block the transportation through its state of petroleum from new offshore oil rigs, officials told Reuters on Wednesday, a move meant to hobble the Trump administration’s effort to vastly expand drilling in U.S. federal waters.

California’s plan to deny pipeline permits for transporting oil from new leases off the Pacific Coast is the most forceful step yet by coastal states trying to halt the biggest proposed expansion in decades of federal oil and gas leasing.   Continue reading “California says will block crude oil from Trump offshore drilling plan”

The number of US renters is growing much more rapidly than the number of homeowners, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that rents in the vast majority of American cities climbed again last month – continuing a trend that has largely persisted since the financial crisis, according to data compiled by RentCafe, a website that provides rental listings nationwide. RentCafe occasionally analyzes the reams of data it collects to provide insightful clues about the US housing market. And as markets puked following a robust headline increase in average hourly earnings – one of the first signs that stagnant consumer prices might once again rise – RC’s latest report shows that the national average rent was $1,361, 2.8% higher than this time last year, but flat on a monthly basis.  Continue reading “Rents Increase In 89% Of Largest US Cities”

Sparta, TN — A chilling body camera video has just been released showing the violent, reckless, and outright insane tendencies of police in Tennessee. While the original killing of Michael Dial was ruled justified—in spite of him being unarmed—the new body camera footage raises some serious questions and shines a disturbing light on police officers and their desire to kill.

Last April, Smithville police attempted to pull Dial over for driving on a suspended license. Only minutes later, police would kill the unarmed man over this minor traffic offense.   Continue reading “Sheriff Orders Cops to Kill Unarmed Man, They Do, and Sheriff “Loves It””

China is reportedly moving missile defense batteries and troops closer to its border with North Korea, a potential sign that Beijing anticipates either a large refugee wave north or a military disturbance triggered by the belligerence of communist dictator Kim Jong-un.

The Philippines stated on Friday that the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia may be connected to three deaths in the country, according to a government-ordered inquiry, and that the drug is not ready for mass immunization.

Sanofi the drug maker revealed in November that Dengvaxia – the world’s first dengue vaccine – might increase the risk of severe disease in people who had never been exposed to the virus. This news aroused an uproar in the Philippines, where more than 800,000 school-age children had been vaccinated with the drug in 2016 alone.   Continue reading “Dengue Vaccine Pulled After It May Be Connected To The Deaths Of 14 Children”
