A retired Rhode Island cop who had his wife’s body in the trunk of his car led police in a chase before shooting himself to death, according to New Jersey State Police.
In a state police statement, the Jersey troopers were contacted by police in Providence and told that murder suspect Franklin Osgood might be driving a black Dodge Charger on the turnpike and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Troopers found the 61-year-old Osgood driving and tried to stop him on the highway but he “refused to pull over,” the statement said.
Osgood then lost control and struck a guardrail before hitting a trooper’s cruiser, cops said.
Police said the officers who approached Osgood’s Charger found a grisly scene.
“After the crash, troopers approached the Dodge and discovered Osgood with a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police wrote in the statement.
“A search of his car led to the discovery of Osgood’s deceased wife, Mary Jo Osgood, 55, of Providence inside the trunk and a semi-automatic handgun inside the passenger compartment.”
The Providence Journal reported that Franklin Osgood was a former Providence police officer who graduated from the academy in 1995 and retired with a disability pension in 2007.
Police in New Jersey said Mary Jo Osgood was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was pronounced dead at a hospital, they said.
Providence cops are investigating Mary Jo Osgood’s death, cops said.

sounds like everything turned out fine
Nope the (adult)children (maybe grand kids?)are still alive so the bloodline will continue.
I can only imagine the kind of stuff that pig was doing prior to his retirement.
This is why you should never feel sorry for a dead cop’s family. They’re usually happiest to see the violent psychopath out of their lives.
This statistic is admittedly old, but at one time 50% of cops were wife-beaters. It’s probably higher today, because they hire sick bastards exclusively now.
“A retired Rhode Island cop who had his wife’s body in the trunk of his car led police in a chase before shooting himself to death,…”
NICE!!!
Don’t need to read any further, the article couldn’t possibly get any better than that!
