FALFURRIAS, Texas — U.S. Border Patrol agents in Texas found the skull of a person believed to have been an illegal immigrant. The skull was found west of the town of Falfurrias, Texas on a ranch off of U.S. Highway 285. This is the fifty-third person found deceased in the ranches of this county located eighty to one hundred miles from the Mexican border.
The skull was found on Sunday morning by Border Patrol agents who were investigating a pile of debris left behind by illegal immigrants who had been moving through the rancher’s land. The agents contacted the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office who initiated a body recovery operation. At this time, no identification of the deceased has been made and an autopsy will be performed to attempt to find any information to establish the identity.
There were no other body parts or clothing remnants present at the scene leading deputies to speculate that the skull may have been carried to the scene near the highway from a location deeper in the ranches in order for it to be discovered. The skull appeared someone small in diameter leading to speculation that the body may not have been fully grown to a mature adult.
This comes at the same time members of the Texas State Guard and Texas Rangers are beginning search and rescue operations in Brooks County to attempt to locate other bodies that may not yet have been found. Officials with Brooks County estimate they fine about one out of five bodies of people who die in the county. Frequently bodies will be reported by illegal immigrants who have been captured but the bodies are not able to be located. This operation by the State Guard will continue for two weeks and then will be repeated from time to time as necessary. Breitbart Texas broke the news of this operation on Friday morning. Later that dayDPS officials confirmed the information reported by Breitbart Texas.
Over three hundred bodies have been found in Brooks County since 2011. Human smugglers drop off their human cargo on remote roads in Brooks County south of the Border Patrol’s Falfurrias Checkpoint. Immigrants who have successfully made it through the fields only to be captured by Border Patrol or Brooks County deputies have told Breitbart Texas their smugglers tell them it is only a thirty minute walk around the checkpoint. The reality is a two to three day march through very soft sand that often causes four-wheel drive vehicles to get stuck. And that is if they don’t get lost. “I get lost after about fifteen minutes in these fields,” one senior Border Patrol agent told Breitbart Texas. “Everything looks the same once you get in these ranch fields.”
Brooks County is responsible for the costs associated with processing and burying these bodies. Each body costs Brooks County, the poorest county in Texas, about $2,500. The State of Texas has recently assisted Brooks County by providing about $300,000 to help offset these costs.
