U.S. authorities are investigating more than $2.6 billion in oil futures shorts that landed within minutes of major announcements tied to the 2026 U.S.-Iran conflict. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has joined the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in a widening inquiry into potential misuse of material non-public information in one of the most liquid and geopolitically sensitive commodity markets on earth, ABC News reports.
Overnight, the Lebanese town of Habboush was targeted in Israeli airstrikes, causing significant damage. Axios reports that the White House is nearing a preliminary deal with Iran to end the war, as Trump post appears to offer olive branch.
White House says it expects a response to the latest offer within 48 hours.
Iran’s initial response via media & national security spox: US demands are unrealistic & do not reflect reality, & Axios report based on too much ‘speculation’.
A key caveat of the US offered deal is that Iran would commit to a moratorium on uranium enrichment, & Washington wants a 20-year ban on this.
Heavy fighting reportedly erupted in the area of Deir Seryan, on the border between Israel and Lebanon and well inside the Israeli occupied “Yellow Line” area of southern Lebanon. Lawmakers toppled Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s pro-EU government in a no-confidence vote on Tuesday, putting at risk the country’s sovereign debt ratings, its access to EU funds and the stability of its currency. Of the valid votes cast in the parliament, 285 voted for the motion of censure and four against, exceeds the 251 signatures collected last week for the motion and above the 233 needed to pass, the official parliamentary count showed.
The US has launched another airstrike in Somalia, according to a press release from US Africa Command, as US media continues to ignore the bombing campaign.
AFRICOM said in a release on Friday that its forces launched an airstrike against al-Shabaab on April 30, about 30 miles northeast of Kismayo, putting the attack in Lower Juba, Somalia’s southernmost region.
