Three Cedar Hill police officers were burned Wednesday in a confrontation with a man who reportedly doused himself with gasoline and caught fire.

The man was then shot by police.

Police responded to a call around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday about a burglary in progress at an apartment near a strip mall at the corner of southeast Hwy. 67 and W. Belt Line Road.

The suspect was spotted in the parking lot of the strip mall. When Officer Ann McSwain tried to make an arrest there, witnesses said that the suspect said that he threatened to light McSwain on fire.

The suspect broke away and ran into a Wingstop at the strip mall. Two other officers, Det. Mike Hernandez and Det. Brandon Woodall, arrived and ran into the Wingstop with McSwain, according to witnesses.

Within 10 seconds, witnesses said they heard a boom and saw the suspect come running out on fire, followed by McSwain on fire.

Hernandez and Woodall tried to subdue the suspect. They ended up getting burned, and one of them shot the suspect in the struggle.

Witnesses ran to help McSwain. One of the witnesses, Spencer Stroud, took off his shirt to put out the flames.

McSwain’s bulletproof vest helped to protect her from getting even worse burns. She and the other officers were taken to Parkland Hospital, where McSwain remains on Wednesday night.

The suspect was said to be undergoing surgery.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

I’d have done my best to help the b#tch, too.

With a 5 gallon can of gasoline.
