PARMA, Ohio — First District Cleveland Police officer Tommie Griffin III, 51, has been placed on unpaid administrative leave after a weekend arrest on allegations he assaulted his girlfriend in Parma.
Griffin was arrested early Saturday in North Royalton by North Royalton Police and was charged with rape, felonious assault and domestic violence.
Griffin appeared in Parma Municipal Court about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday before Parma Municipal Court Judge Deanna O’Donnell. Griffin was represented by attorney Henry Hilow.
O’Donnell continued Griffin’s $250,000 bond and also issued a temporary protection order that prevents Griffin from being within 1,000 feet of the victim. Griffin admitted to having guns in his home and will have to turn them over.
Parma Police already have his service weapon and the keys he had to the victim’s home.
Tuesday afternoon, Griffin waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
WKYC decided not to live stream his court appearance to protect the victim’s privacy.
Around noon on Saturday, Parma officers responded to a call from the 7000 block of State Road to check on the welfare of a 42-year-old woman. Police found her alone inside the home with serious injuries to her face.
The house was also in disarray.
She told police that her boyfriend, Griffin, entered her bedroom earlier that morning and attacked her while she was sleeping.
He allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The victim said he pointed a gun at her and struck her several times on her face with his hands and with the gun. She also reported that her boyfriend fired two shots with the gun next to her, but she was not hit.
She was later taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and treated for her injuries.
Parma Police discovered that Griffin was at a business in North Royalton. Officers from the North Royalton Police Department arrested and took him to the Parma Jail.
Griffin was also involved in an incident in 2009, in which a close friend accused him of kidnapping and assaulting her.
Griffin was hired with the Cleveland Police Department on Feb. 1, 1994.
