Never could stand Shelley Duvall after seeing her in this movie. She totally trashed the character of the book, who was definitely scared, but she didn’t whine & scream about it the whole time. She was far tougher than Duvall played her.
But it wasn’t till after I woke up that I discovered why Kubrick put things in the movie (that weren’t in the book) that made no sense. He was telling us through imagery that he shot the moon landings here on Earth.
In Shelley’s defense… Don’t know if she’s recovered yet but a few years ago she was suffering with severe mental challenges from all the psych drugs they had her on, and because Hollywood was spitting her out. But I loved her in Popeye with Robin Williams. The film was a sleeper. I think it didn’t do that great at box-office, but now is embraced as a cult classic. I love it, and its music. Shelley was a perfect Olive Oyl:
Didn’t like Duvall in the role either…too whimpy considering the demonics going on in the hotel, but at least she got her and the kid out in time. And I will say this–I will miss Stanley Kubrick and his movies, from Clockwork Orange to Eyes Wide Shut.
Stanley Kubrick…..yeah Jay Weidner has some videos on you tube. And don’t forget WHY it’s called The Shining……..Scatman Crothers was Dick Hallorann the grounds care taker and was telling boy Danny in the kitchen scene Danny Torrance ( actor last name Lloyd) about how he and his grandmother had telekinesis….back and forth….mind communication! Shining. Crothers made songs on youtube still found today…No more comment.

The Durango 95 purred away real horror show – a nice warm vibrating feeling all through your gutty works.
