As Hurricane Sandy barrels into New York City, an FDNY spokesperson confirmed to HuffPost that the boom of a crane at the One57 building in Midtown collapsed on Monday.
The construction site of what will be a 90-story luxury apartment tower is located at57th Street and 6th Avenue.
A part of the crane is now dangling off the building, a dangerous 65 stories above the ground.
As of this time, there are no reported injuries.
From The AP:
The city has ordered people in neighboring buildings to move to lower floors. Streets have been cleared. The call came in around 2:30 p.m. Monday as conditions worsened from the approaching Hurricane Sandy. Meteorologists say winds that far off the ground might have been close to 95 mph at the time.
The Buildings Department had suspended construction work at 5 p.m. Saturday. It reminded contractors and property owners to secure construction sites and buildings.
Developer Gary Barnett of One57 told The Observer, “Can’t talk now but we don’t know anything yet. We’re doing everything we can, and hopefully no one is going to get hurt.”
HuffPost’s Janeane Chun snapped the photo below and wrote, “Crane dangles 75 stories above W. 57th Street as police and firefighters block off streets and crowds gather near the corners, looking up. Here’s a photo from a cab as I was passing by. I walked by this building yesterday afternoon and told my friends that crane wouldn’t make it.”
You may remember One57 from reports earlier this month that the building’s billionaire tenants could get tax breaks designed for low-income residents. According to the AP, “A six-bedroom penthouse at the building… is under contract for a reported $90 million.”
This is a developing story…
What happened to your video, Angel. It plays a blank video. This is a big one isn`t it – I have been following it and some of those satalite images are of a real monster storm.
We checked it and the video is playing fine on our end.
yes Henry, I tried it again and it is playing now, weird eh – I tried 3 times before though, but it is working now. Thanks Henry.
The video doesn’t seem to be working on my end. Just repeats the first couple of seconds in a loop or something.
It’s a live feed, dude.
I just kepted going back and forth a coulple of times and then if finaly worked for me – I hope that it isn`t our pc`s ya know. I`m going to give mine a disc scan, a de frag, and a virus scan tonight or tomorow I`m thinking. Has your pc been rumming slow lately NC, `cause when mine does it seems like that is when I will start to have these kind of prob.s.——–P S, yep NC , as soon as I replied I got a pop-up from Kaspersky and their background scan said that I got hit with 1 maleware. I am kind of wondering if that Rob guy from off grid survival did something. He did send me some nasty E-mail after giving him a piece of my mind for what he was responsible for doing to FTTWR. You just might want to do that scan thing on your pc just to find out ya know NC.
Oh, my bad.
I tried calling Angel, but no answer, so I e-mailed her. Hope she’s o.k.
No doubt #1, I hope she`s alright too. I cannot believe they haven`t canceled out on that appointment on thurs., I sure tommorows app. is cancelled.
Yes, tomorrow’s appointments are cancelled. All VA facilities in the area are closed (today & tomorrow). We’ll see about Thurs. Hopefully they won’t cancel that one.
Sorry, I got a call from St. Joe’s about Mom and didn’t transfer to you. I apologize. Haven’t gotten your email, yet. We’re fine. The big problems are expected @ around 8pm w/ the high tide. Expecting underground phone and internet lines to go down w/ the flooding. Con Ed may shut off power to protect their equipment. Even w/ all their talk, they didn’t shut down the transformer that covers Battery Park City/Wall St. in time and it just blew a few minutes ago.
Glad to hear you’re alright, Angel. Hope you can stay online as long as you can.
Blessings
Now it’s not showing at all. Maybe the camera blew away.
