DARPA Is Planning to Hack the Human Brain to Let Us “Upload” Skills

MINDHACK FOR FASTER LEARNING

In March 2016, DARPA — the U.S. military’s “mad science” branch — announced their Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT) program. The TNT program aims to explore various safe neurostimulation methods for activating synaptic plasticity, which is the brain’s ability to alter the connecting points between neurons — a requirement for learning. DARPA hopes that building up that ability by subjecting the nervous system to a kind of workout regimen will enable the brain to learn more quickly.

The ideal end benefit for this kind of breakthrough would be downloadable learning. Rather than needing to learn, for example, a new language through rigorous study and practice over a long period of time, we could basically “download” the knowledge after putting our minds into a highly receptive, neuroplastic state. Clearly, this kind of research would benefit anyone, but urgent military missions can succeed or fail based on the timing. In those situations, a faster way to train personnel would be a tremendous boon.

FIRST NEUROSTIMULATION, THEN APPLICATION

As part of the TNT program, DARPA is funding eight projects at seven institutions. All projects are part of a coordinated effort that will first study the fundamental science undergirding brain plasticity and will conclude with human trials. The first portion of the TNT program will work to unravel the neural mechanisms that allow nerve stimulation to influence brain plasticity. The second portion of the program will practically apply what has been learned in a variety of training exercises. To ensure the work stays practical, foreign language specialists, intelligence analysts, and others who train personnel now will work with researchers to help refine the TNT platform to suit military training needs. Researchers will compare the efficacy of using an implanted device to stimulate the brain versus non-invasive stimulation. They will also explore both the ethics of enhanced learning through neurostimulation and ways to avoid side effects and potential risks.

“The Defense Department operates in a complex, interconnected world in which human skills such as communication and analysis are vital, and the Department has long pushed the frontiers of training to maximize those skills,” Doug Weber, the TNT Program Manager, said in a DARPA press release. “DARPA’s goal with TNT is to further enhance the most effective existing training methods so the men and women of our Armed Forces can operate at their full potential.”If the TNT program succeeds, striving to be all you can be may mean learning at a much faster pace, and not just for military personnel. Downloadable learning may be one of the ways we achieve next-level humanity.

  1. “They will also explore both the ethics of enhanced learning through neurostimulation and ways to avoid side effects and potential risks.”

Ethics?! They are going to explore the ethics?….smh……

    1. Tell me about it. DARPA is concerned about ethics in the same way that a porn star is concerned about chastity. And having the word “Defense” in the name of their outfit is absurd, just as is the case with the larger Department of “Defense.”

  2. I sometimes wonder if DARPA is full of kooks. What they’re describing here sounds FAR too ambitious to be done in the foreseeable future.

In particular, who the hell is going to volunteer to have a device implanted into his own brain just for research purposes? Brain surgery isn’t exactly risk-free. (I imagine these monsters will start out doing this research on animals, but eventually they’ll have to try it on people.)

  3. “I sometimes wonder if DARPA is full of kooks.”

They’re all evil Kooks and if they are talking about it now they’ve already done it. Usually that’s the way it works.
Suppose really, they have already shown us how they can make an artificial hand or limb respond to brain impulse, think they are in refining stage or introducing it as normal stage? mho
    Whoops! meant to reply…..

    1. I seriously doubt they’ve already accomplished this. Most DARPA projects fail, and the ones that do succeed eventually become public knowledge. It’s very hard to keep a technology secret after it’s been used in war, and technology for wartime use is what DARPA is all about.

There’s nothing special about government scientists. Most of the best scientists and engineers do R&D at universities or for private companies, and their work usually isn’t secret. So, generally speaking, the technological capability of government is pretty close to that of private industry. Same with the more advanced foreign governments (Russia, China, etc.).

  4. While I agree with most stated, they have been working with implants with brain to movement for prosthetics, also for feeling warmth ect with prosthetics, implanting chips in/spinal cord.
Personally would be skeptical to think they aren’t already checking feedback and data on results of implanted chips. Well, my thoughts on it at any rate.
Okay, think my computer/reply not working. First time thought oops, then worked then not? Sorry

    1. I hear you on those brain-controlled prosthetics. But while I’m no expert on neuroscience or anything, I still think that’s a lot easier to pull off than actually uploading knowledge. Getting motor neurons to fire just strikes me as a much simpler problem, though I could be mistaken.

The other thing is that the neural prosthetic work seems to have been done on people who were already severely disabled. People like that would have less to lose and more to gain by volunteering for experimental brain implants. A normal, healthy person would have to be a complete jackass to allow someone to open up his skull.

Then again, there are plenty of morons out there, so maybe they’ll get some volunteers after all.

      1. Looks like reply is working this time…
        You write very well!
I do read medical journals, CEU’s, haven’t been lately, leaving that field.
That said, once they figured out spinal, that was years ago, thinking it would progress to brain eventually, actually thought that is where it would go.
I am not an expert in any way shape or form, I read a lot when I can, and observe.
Personally pity the fool/first jackass’ that does/did go for this (Thinking dementia, dementia with lewy bodies, Alzheimer, will opt in c or without consent) and probably have been working on those already, and people in the military.
Seems I read somewhere where they were doing experiments with military, chips, supps and injection wise regarding sleep deprivation and alertness.
To sum sheit up from my pov, the brain (Not going into glands they probably have….) needs nutrition, has to have vitamins, proteins, enzymes, ect..so to make things fire would think, and their probably past this stage, but anyway, certain (Things) would have to be abundant for whatever they are trying to manipulate, where some kind of injection(s) and supps could come in.
In the Great name of Medicine!
My opinions aside, would think at least at first!, would have to have Vaccinations/transmitters (Proteins ex) or something of the like in the system/brain to help embed/ (fire/stimulate chip) while they are trying to get their results.
Well don’t know how they will go about it, but don’t doubt that they are totally working it and are probably further along than I can imagine.
Summation, robotic serf what they are trying to achieve

  5. “Rather than needing to learn, for example, a new language through rigorous study and practice over a long period of time, we could basically “download” the knowledge after putting our minds into a highly receptive, neuroplastic state.”

Sounds like something straight out of the Matrix:

Neo (after downloading the Kung fu app): “I know Kung fu.”
    Morpheus: “Show me.”

“Researchers will compare the efficacy of using an implanted device to stimulate the brain versus non-invasive stimulation.”

Oh boy, the Mark of the Beast begins here.

“They will also explore both the ethics of enhanced learning through neurostimulation and ways to avoid side effects and potential risks.”

Sure….as if anyone can prevent mind-manipulation when implanted with a chip.

Oh to be young and naive…….

”If the TNT program succeeds, striving to be all you can be may mean learning at a much faster pace, and not just for military personnel. Downloadable learning may be one of the ways we achieve next-level humanity.”

Or like TNT, it just may literally blow up in all our faces and be the end of humanity.

But hey, that’s just crazy talk, right?

    Unfrigginbelievable……..

  6. Let them hack away, they will find out that 90% of the brains have a default setting called DAD ( dumb as dirt ) and the neurons will be flashing 12:00 just like their old VCR

  7. There’s more to imagine in that handful of ishy goo than meets the eye. Billions of neurons with no place to go except Taco Bell or Mac and Don’s. Yep, it’s called “brain food” for retards. So, on your next trip to the mall, be content with the knowledge that your getting smarter every minute you stand in line at fast-food heaven with all the other “geniuses” out there. Poison for the population, manufactured, shipped, received, and willingly consumed. “Here, have a turd sandwich. Oh yummy! Can I have another. Hey, I’ll just open my mouth, you shovel it in! Wash it down with your favorite beverage from the Urine Drinkers Society.”

The difference between “brain” and “mind” are like two separate worlds. One is a ball of goo, the other is timeless.
