The Atlantic City, New Jersey police department appears to have a very bad apple in their force.

Officer Sterling Wheaten has been the subject of two lawsuits in the past month, at least eight lawsuits in the last three years, and, according to an attorney in one of those lawsuits, 21 internal-affairs complaints from 2008 to 2011. None of those complaints were sustained.

The city will pay $15,000 to settle a civil-rights lawsuit that alleged one of the Seattle Police Department’s most decorated officers — the man who fatally shot cop-killer Maurice Clemmons — illegally searched a seven-time felon during an expletive-laced jaywalking incident in 2009.

Officer Benjamin Kelly found a cheap .22-caliber handgun tucked in Charles Shateek Smith’s coat that rainy January night. About the same time yesterday that National Public Radio was publishing an interview with B. Todd Jones, director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a federal grand jury in Seattle handed down a 38-page indictment against a former ATF supervisor at the agency’s field office here that contains serious allegations of embezzlement and making false statements.

A school in South Carolina has been forced to cancel its annual toy collection drive for the charity Operation Christmas Child by atheists who claim that the event is “religious” and therefore should not be allowed.

For the past three years East Point Academy in West Columbia, S.C., has been participating in the toy drive for needy children. CHICAGO (AP) — Dennis Rodman is preparing to thrill North Korean fans during an exhibition basketball tour there late next month.

Though he ducked questions in an interview with The Associated Press about whether his Christmas-time visit would be used for propaganda purposes by Kim Jong Un, the 29-year-old leader of one of the world’s most repressive regimes, Rodman said he’ll be accompanied on the trip by a dozen or so former NBA players.
