The hatchet-wielding man who assaulted four New York police officers in Queens conducted a terrorist attack, New York City police said.

At a briefing at New York Police Department headquarters on Friday, New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton was asked if the incident was a terrorist act. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man armed with an assault rifle shot three sheriff’s deputies and a civilian, killing two of the deputies and leading dozens of police officers on a wild six-hour chase and manhunt Friday. The pursuit spanned two Northern California counties before the 34-year-old suspect was taken into custody.

AUBURN, Wash. — Like all religions, the Sikh faith is steeped in tradition. One of the most revered is the carrying of a Kirpan, a sword or dagger, at all times.

“People will even wear it in the shower. It’s kind of hard for others to understand,” said Jaswinder Singh, spokesman for the Gurudwara Sikh Center of Seattle.

Social media posts penned by the shooter in Friday’s rampage at a Washington State high school portray a head-over-heels teenager who grew more and more tormented when the relationship fell apart.

Authorities have identified the gunman as Jaylen Fryberg. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a second sheriff’s deputy has died after being shot by a suspect who has now been apprehended for four shootings.

Placer County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dena Erwin says one of her department’s deputies was killed Friday after he was shot with an AR-15-type assault rifle. A second Placer County Sheriff’s deputy was shot in the arm and was expected to survive. After weeks of speculation over the fate of Europe’s economy, Ebola fears and plunging oil prices, investors were able to get back to basics. Wall Street is in the midst of one of the busiest times of the year, when companies report their quarterly results. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Remains found nearly a week ago in a rural area of Virginia are those of a missing university student, authorities said Friday, as they turned their attention to filing possible additional charges against the suspect accused of abducting her.

University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham, 18, disappeared Sept. 13 after a night out with friends. In a Washington Post commentary published on Monday, Joseph Perrone claims “a handful of deaths in Denver were tied to edible marijuana use this year.” That’s true, if by “handful” you mean two and if by “tied” you mean attributed by pot prohibitionists.

Perrone is referring to Levy Thamba Pongi, a visiting 19-year-old college student who jumped off a Denver hotel balcony after eating a pot cookie on March 11, and Kristine Kirk, whose husband allegedly murdered her on April 14 after eating cannabis candy. Perrone thus exaggerates the number of deaths and blames them on marijuana through post hoc, ergo propter hoc reasoning. This in an essay about  “the junk ‘science’ behind the marijuana legalization movement,” written by the chief science officer at an organization called the Center for Accountability in Science. A California sheriff’s deputy was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting spree that started in a motel parking lot in Sacramento on Friday, authorities said.

The incident began on Friday morning in the parking lot of a Motel 6 when a deputy, later identified as Danny Oliver, 47, approached a vehicle considered to be suspicious, said Sacramento County Sheriff Lieutenant R.L. On Wednesday, just two days after a “radicalized” man ran over two Canadian soldiers in a mall parking lot, a gunmen opened fire at Canada’s National War Memorial and at Parliament Hill, killing one soldier and wounding a security guard. He was later killed by an armed guard.
