The manslaughter trial of a New York City police officer who fired the bullet that killed an unarmed black man in the darkened stairwell of a housing project is due to begin on Thursday.

In the wake of the December 2nd terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, California, the county sheriff’s office reports a massive increase in applications for concealed carry permits. Typically, the office processes around 10 permits a week, but the last month has seen that number rise to 75—a full 750% increase in applications. All five bright planets will appear together in the morning sky from about January 20 to February 20, 2016. That hasn’t happened since 2005.
The last time that all five visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) appeared in the same sky together was over 10 years ago, from December 15, 2004, to January 15, 2005. Alabama Circuit Court Judge Marvin Wiggins has been suspended with pay from the bench after the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission filed charges against him that he threatened to throw defendants in jail who had no money to pay their fines unless they donated blood.
The charges were brought to the Alabama Court of the Judiciary, which could reprimand, suspend, or remove Wiggins from the bench. The commission brought the charges Jan. 8, but they were not made public until Friday. Continue reading “Judge who demanded blood from defendants charged, suspended”

There’s nothing inherently wrong with being uncomfortable around firearms, and not wanting to own them. There also isn’t anything wrong with trusting the police to protect you as opposed to protecting yourself with a gun, if that’s your personal choice. Former lead singer and guitarist for CCR John Fogerty recently said in an interview that the “jungle” he’s singing about in the band’s 1970 hit “Run Through the Jungle” is not Vietnam.
“The thing I wanted to talk about was gun control and the proliferation of guns,” Fogerty said. “I think my first experience as a kid was hearing about the fellow that climbed up in the Texas tower and was able to kill several people on the campus.”

Leonid Brezhnev would be proud of Floyd Prozanski, Oregon’s leading anti gun state senator. Not content with passing the grandiose “universal background check” bill last year that was supposed to solve all of the world’s problems, Prozanski has now introduced a bill that would allow people to declare someone to be having a “mental health emergency”, which would result in a 30 day “hold” being placed on the accused’s ability to purchase a firearm. The accused would not even know they are on the no-buy list, as they would not be informed of the accusation unless they tried to purchase a firearm and go through the background check process.
