California is poised to create the nation’s first state-funded program making guaranteed-income payments to some residents after lawmakers unanimously passed a bill calling for the monthly checks.

The state House and Senate passed the legislation unanimously on Tuesday. It would provide funding for monthly payments of between $500 and $1,000 to pregnant women and young adults who formerly lived in foster homes. The bill will become law, earmarking $35 million for the program in its first year, if Governor Gavin Newsom signs it as expected. Four law enforcement officers were shot and one was killed by a suspect barricaded in a home in Levelland, Texas.

Levelland police officers came under fire at about 1 p.m. Thursday from a person who was locked and barricaded inside a home, police said. They had previously received a call from a citizen who said their neighbor was “acting strange and appeared to be walking around with a large gun,” police said. The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was called to assist Levelland police officers at 2:15 p.m. local time. Two important regulatory developments are converging in the United States and the United Kingdom at the same time for the ill-fated COVID-19 investigational vaccines.

In America, the Centers for Disease Control has logged more grim milestones as of June 4, 2021, with 329,021 certified serious safety reports including 5,888 deaths and 19,597 hospitalizations. While the CDC has stated twice on their website that none of the deaths were caused by the vaccine, without external unbiased safety mechanisms including critical event committee, data safety monitoring board, and human ethics board, interpretation of the CDC causality claim can only be made in the context of semantics.
