WILLARD, OH (Toledo News Now) – Evacuations are underway in Williard (Huron County) after a train derailment caused a dangerous chemical spill.

A CSX spokesperson confirmed that a train derailed around 11 PM Tuesday, which caused a leak of styrene monomer, a chemical used in plastic.  CSX says the chemical is flammable and could cause respiratory damage.

Willard residents living with a half mile from N. Main St. and the double viaduct have been told to evacuate to the local high school or a hotel.  Approximately 400 households are within that range.  N. Main St. has been shut down from Townline Rd. 12 to Woodland.

CSX says they’ve stopped the leak but are still working with local police and firefighters to clean it up and investigate.

Toledo News Now has a crew on the way to the scene and will provide more information as it becomes available.
