Feds are spying on rest areas, creating a multi-state bathroom surveillance program

DOT’s and police are now spying on rest areas in real-time 24/7.

According to an article in the Star Tribune, the Department of Transportation (DOT) in eight states have installed cameras and sensors in rest areas.

“New technology rolled out in Minnesota and seven other Midwestern states aims to help Wortham and other truckers find parking by broadcasting in real-time the number of spaces available at rest areas.”

Rest areas do much more than let truckers know about parking availability.

“In Minnesota, six rest areas have the new technology, including cameras taking regular pictures of the parking lots and sensors the size of hockey pucks embedded in the concrete of each parking spot. Those sensors beam data to dynamic roadside signs that display the number of parking spaces available.”

Rest area surveillance is being billed as “the nation’s first multi-state truck parking information system.” But as you will see, it is fairly easy for law enforcement to use rest area parking cameras and sensors to spy on everyone.

According to the article; Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin are currently spying on rest areas. An article in the Orlando Sentinel reveals that Florida is also spying on rest areas, bringing the total to nine states.

“Underground sensors shaped like hockey pucks were planted at each of the truck spaces, along with detection devices at the entrances and exits of the rest stops and weigh stations to monitor the number of available parking spaces.” (To find out more about magnetic rest area sensors click here.)

Two years ago, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and United States Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration Truck Parking Facilities Program issued a report explaining how DOT’s are spying on rest areas.

The report called “A Comprehensive System For Assessing Truck Parking Availability” reveals that DOT’s are also using truck GPS’s and Geo-Fences that are spaced every five miles to identify vehicles approaching rest areas.

Looking at the subject “Detection Performance Measuring Methodology” (page 40) reveals that rest area sensors and cameras are being used to detect every type of vehicle.

“A manual ground-truth process was developed to interactively label the parking status of several observed spaces which were processed by the vision module detection algorithm. General attributes pertaining to weather conditions, double-parking, private vehicles vs. trucks (SUTs, buses, and large RVs were also classified as trucks).”

Just think about what this means, now cops will know in real-time when you and your family use the bathroom!

Rest area spying goes by many different names, like SmartPark: Real-Time Parking Availability, the Truck Parking Availability System or the Truck Parking Information Management System. (To find out more about Minnesota’s 511 program click here.)

SmartPark and Smart Drive both have one thing in common, surveillance.

Last year, I reported how SmartDrive claimed that truck drivers who do not want to turn their vehicles into rolling surveillance platforms “have something to hide”.  Using surveillance cameras, Geo-Fences and sensors to monitor vehicles in rest areas is the epitome of a police state.

Law enforcement with help from the Feds have effectively created the nation’s first bathroom surveillance program.

SmartPark also spies on air travelers

Airports in at least three states are using the DOT’s SmartPark Technology to spy on air travelers.

SmartPark is being used in the La Guardia and JFK International airport in New York, the Philadelphia International Airport and at the Bill and Hillary Clinton Airport in Arkansas.

If you include SmartPark airport parking surveillance the number of states spying on motorists jumps to twelve!

How long before DOT’s claims they need to use license plate readers and facial recognition cameras at rest areas?

  1. they just put a tall pole camera at the rest area about 6-8 miles up the freeway from where i get on the freeway from my home to work route

    and all over the building
    I dont use the place
but Ive noticed the police giving out parking or obstruction of traffic tickets to truckers that have to park on the shoulder of the highway at rest areas because they are full up now with all the hours of drive time restrictions on semi drivers

theres not enough room for them all in the rest areas any more, and its just a ridiculous money grab now , i see the pigs out there almost every morning giving tickets

  2. Also notice that enemy on a trip to Nothern Indiana that the rest areas were pack in an out of the places , never seen so many 18 wheeler park all over the highway ramps . Also seeing more tall poles with cameras along highways coming into big shities . Man I don’t misses driving rigs anymore seeing the hoops you guys put up with ,,,, how high should I jump today to makes buck

    1. could you imagine making a 1-2 state run or more
having to park overnight , get to a rest area and its full .. you computer log says yer done ..rest now
      off duty
you cant park in the Rest Stop because ..well they are full
so you sneak a bit out of the entrance and pull over to the side as far as you can
get in the sleeper bunk and go to bed

4-6 Hrs into your down schedule and sleeping , comes a knock at your cab and its Mr Revenuer and his happy ass self

so not only did he now screw up your “off clock” allowance of time
he hands you a ticket that costs close to or more than your even going to make taking this run
have this happen to you enough times
I’d be pissed enough to pull that bitch in the cab with me never to be seen again , and the regulations on time never took this shit into account as to how crowded these trucks stops are becoming let alone the Rest Areas

stupid people making rules/laws for shit they dont understand the magnitude of

I see it every morning on my way to my gig..these state pigs sit in the back of the rest area , and wait to pounce ..and its a big freaking pay day for them

Granted Im lucky , i only run local , and i donnt have to play the electric log shit(yet)..and Im the boss so I hardly have to drive any more ..but Im paying attention to this shit because it affects my business

  3. What a racket! First, pass laws restricting a driver’s hours behind the wheel, knowing full well it will cause all of the truck stops and rest areas to fill up. Then send your revenue collectors out to issue all of the truckers paying paper. Man, all these crooks do is think up new ways to steal our money. And, what kind of subhuman freak would do it? Says a lot about the mindset of these pigs.
