RICHMOND, Ind. (June 18, 2014) – A Richmond woman was shot in the face and a toddler was bound with duct tape Tuesday night, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department.

The 911 call from the Robert F. Smith Apartments at 850 N. 17th St. took place around 9:35 p.m. with reports of shots fired.

When authorities arrived, they found a woman inside an apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Reid Hospital in Richmond and then she was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The victim has been identified as Christina Hampton, 22.  She is in stable condition.

Additionally, police found a toddler tied up with duct tape inside the residence.

The toddler was checked out by EMS but was not transported.

A neighbor, who asked for anonymity when speaking with FOX59 News, said he was the one who cut the duct tape off the toddler’s face.  He said the little girl’s first words after removing the tape were, “They shot mommy in the face,” implying the child had witnessed the shooting.

Police are investigating the incident as a home invasion.

Neighbors reported seeing two black males fleeing the apartment immediately following the shooting. A K-9 team canvassed the neighborhood, but there are no leads on suspects at this time.
