I found part of this clip elsewhere, but missing Cash’s extended spoken introduction. I hate to sound like a college nerd (because I’m not, I just married one), but the additional context his remarks add make the song even more impressive to me. This was from the February 17, 1971 episode of his show, by which time the Suits had forced him to start doing “theme” shows. This is from the best of the bunch, “Johnny Cash On Campus,” which also featured Neil Young and James Taylor. It’s super cool to Cash introduce what would go on to become his signature song to zero crowd applause. It’s like hearing a recording of Zepplin play “Stairway…” to audience indifference before the album was released. Shiver me timbers!
classic truth. I heard it when it first came out. Thanks Angel. 🙂

Thank you, Angel. Johnny was the only star I ever shed a tear for when he passed and this song was one of the main reasons for that. It’s also why I stopped carrying Zippo lighters. …someone stole my POW MIA Zippo from me in my shop while it was was playing(probably) and it outraged me so much that someone could do something like that while such truthful words were being sung. Oh, well. I guess the lesson there is it truly is necessary to have a man in black to remind you that all is not as it should be? Doesn’t mean stop trying though and don’t let the bastards grind you down.
