Limited Skippy Peanut Butter Recall in 7 States

New York Times – by Christina Hauser

Cases of one variety of Skippy peanut butter have been recalled in seven states for fear that metal shavings could have contaminated some of the spread, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The agency released a statement from Hormel Foods, which makes the peanut butter, saying the recall covers 153 cases of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread. The products were sent to distribution centers that serve Publix, Target and Walmart stores in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas.

The shavings had been found at a plant in Little Rock, Ark., during a routine cleaning and inspection of a production-line magnet used to ensure that no metal gets into the peanut butter, said Rick Williamson, a spokesman for Hormel Foods.

“During this shift, we detected metal shavings and quarantined the product,” he said in an emailed statement. “Unfortunately, a pallet of product that was to be destroyed was inadvertently released.”

Hormel said the recall was a precaution enacted because of the “possibility” that some jars may contain small pieces of metal shavings. The company said it had no reports of any consumer injuries or complaints, but noted that objects greater than a quarter of an inch in length may cause choking, perforation of the intestines or infection.

The malfunctioning equipment has since been repaired, Mr. Williamson said.

Only 16.3-ounce jars with a best-by date of Dec. 14, 2016, and with the bar code 37600-10500 are affected, the company said.

I just bought some Skippy about a week ago, but I NEVER buy anything labeled ‘reduced fat’.
