Mysterious stickers placed on residents’ mailboxes spurs concern in Plano

PLANO — It’s not the chore Carolyn Chaufty had on her list for Tuesday.

The Plano resident used a razor blade to scrape away the sticker that had been placed on her mailbox. She’s not the only one in her Hunters Ridge neighborhood in Plano that has it.

“It’s not like it’s just happening on one street,” said David Tilley, with Plano Police Department. “We’re getting multiple streets reporting.”

Tilley is talking about the mysterious yellow and black reflective stickers found on mailboxes.

“It’s unsettling to think somebody would be tagging mail boxes,” Chaufty said. “For what purpose?”

Plano police are hoping for any leads. Tilley says the department was first notified of the stickers almost two weeks ago.

“One of the things we always look into is worst case scenario,” Tilley said.

Tilley says so far there’s nothing that points to these stickers being for nefarious reasons. Tilley says one of worst case scenarios here is that thieves may be targeting homes and placing tags using the reflective stickers.

Tilley says 23 stickers have been officially reported to the department but also says there may be up to 60 mailboxes with stickers on them in the neighborhood.

“Number one, we want to know why these are being placed on there,” he said. “And two, we want to know who’s doing it.”

We know who’s not doing it, investigators checked. Tilley says it’s not the United States Post Office and not the city of Plano. Police say if this is a service company or for some other innocent reason, please come forward.

“I’m thinking something bad is going to happen,” said another neighbor who didn’t want to be identified. “Something really bad is going to happen.”

Plano police ask that you take off the sticker and then call the Public Information Department at the Plano Police Department. One neighbor told News 8 that he’ll do that and more.

“I’m well armed,” he said. “I’m well trained … So they better not try.”

Police hope with enough cooperation they can map out a trend. And if the reasons are indeed nefarious, stop what most all of us fear this is.

  1. “I’m thinking something bad is going to happen,” said another neighbor who didn’t want to be identified. “Something really bad is going to happen.”

    SHIT !! IM SKEERED!!!!!!

    1. “I pooped my pants! They said something bad is going to happen!” “Baa, baa, baa!” “I’m doomed, I had a sticker on my mailbox!”

  2. For what it’s worth
In my area I see a fair amount of mail boxes marked with reflective dots of various colors
    Red, yellow, blue
No one seems to know the significance of them
Some boxes have them , some have none , some have more than one sticker
I personally asked my mail carrier what the reason for them and she had no idea , so it’s not for them , or she’s been told to not to disclose, yet I wouldn’t think they would tell them if it were nefarious either

I don’t have any on my box , and if I did , I’d remove them
If there wasn’t something fishy going on , than why doesn’t anyone come forward with a ligitimate answer for their purpose ?

  3. Might it have to do with paper delivery?
Some get the paper daily some only on the weekends.
Different stickers to identify who gets what paper.
I have seen non reflective paper dots on mail boxes.
The reflective stickers would make it easier to spot in the night.

    1. that could be, but I get the paper..and so does my neighbor

so why would i not have a dot and he has 2?
