MADISON, Wis. — A state appeals court ruled against a pair of raw milk producers Thursday, but sidestepped the issue of whether a person has a right to purchase and consume unpasteurized milk.

An Oregon landowner has been subjected to a 30-day prison sentence for what he says was a simple act of collecting rainwater on his own property. CNS News reports that Gary Harrington was convicted of nine misdemeanors and sentenced to 30 days in prison, as well as slapped with a $1,500 fine, for diverting snow runoff and rainwater into three reservoirs on his property, a move that local officials say violates an antiquated law governing personal water use.

Known as the “Rain Main,” Harrington reportedly built the reservoirs, which hold some 13 million gallons of water, for his own personal use. One of the reservoirs he stocked with largemouth bass for leisure purposes, and when wildfires emerge in the area, he says the water from this and the other two reservoirs can be used for mitigatory purposes. A former high ranking CIA official in Baghdad tells Newsweek that Turkish jets carried out airstrikes on Islamic State (I.S.) militants threatening Kurdish refugees–an assertion that Ankara denies.

The White House, meanwhile, said it had launched humanitarian air drops to the beleaguered Kurds trapped by advancing I.S. forces in the northern part of Iraq and was considering air strikes to fend off an expected assault.

U.S. forces were placed “on a hair trigger,” according to NBC News, with a twofold priority: to provide humanitarian relief for refugees from Islamic State aggression and to protect U.S. officials on the ground.

Relatives of John Crawford, the man shot dead by police at a Beavercreek Walmart, say they’ve contacted civil rights organizations because they believe the shooting was not justified.

They believe he was killed possibly after he picked up a toy gun in the store.

Crawford, 22, of Ridge Drive in Fairfield, was identified as the man Beavercreek police shot and killed Tuesday night.

President Obama announced on Thursday that he has authorized the use of airstrikes in Iraq if they are necessary to protect American personnel. He also stated that humanitarian air drops have been made to help besieged religious minorities in the country.

A jury in Detroit found Theodore Wafer guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Renisha McBride Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Wafer, 55, was on trial in Detroit’s Wayne County Circuit Court after shooting 19-year-old McBride on his porch in November. McBride appeared at Wafer’s house in Dearborn Heights, adjacent to Detroit, around 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 2. She crashed her car nearby earlier that night, and no one knows her whereabout in the several hours between the accident and her death. She was severely intoxicated. GOLDSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA – A 28 year old woman was forced to use a firearm to defend herself early this morning.

Around 4:30am, the woman, identified as Paige Ham, heard a noise in her backyard. She then noticed that the lock on her shed had been removed. That’s when Ham decided to act. According to local media outlets,

Ham had a roommate call 911 and went out with a gun to see if anything was stolen.

That’s when 28-year-old Christopher Todd Brogden allegedly rushed out of the building towards her.

Ham fired her gun, hitting Brogden. He was last reported in stable condition at Vidant Hospital in Greenville.

CBS 13 in Sacramento reports that one American volunteer in Sierra Leone was crushed that he had to leave his mission there because of the Ebola virus outbreak. Dawson Jope, a Peace Corps volunteer, had planned to live in Sierra Leone for two years, but that plan was scuttled by the Ebola virus.

He said he wasn’t frightened by being in the midst of the outbreak, only disappointed that the promise he had made to help was broken.

HOUSTON, Texas — About half of the nation’s federal criminal cases last year were filed in regions near the U.S.-Mexico border, according to an alarming annual report from the Obama Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ).

During FY 2013, U.S. Attorney’s offices filed a total of 61,529 criminal cases against defendants, according to the DOJ. HOUSTON, Texas — Individuals and families immigrating to the U.S. legally are required to pay for and undergo medical examinations by approved physicians; those who are deemed as having “inadmissible health-related conditions” are not allowed into the country. But the same standards are not applied to illegal immigrants, many of whom remain in the U.S. despite testing positive for diseases that would prevent law-abiding migrants from entering.

The current border crisis has involved tens of thousands of Central Americans entering the U.S. illegally. Some of these individuals have tested positive for illnesses including tuberculosis, chicken pox, and other viruses–despite this, most of them are not immediately deported.
