Police swarm abduction suspect on San Diego freeway, children rescued

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police in a San Diego suburb Thursday tackled an abduction suspect to the ground and rescued four children after a highway pursuit and standoff in California.

California Highway Patrol troopers began pursuing a black Nissan sought in the case of a missing Southern California family at about 8:30 a.m.

The vehicle came to a stop near a highway onramp near Santee. Two of the children escaped and officers then used armored trucks to surround the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect then stepped out of the car and walked toward the edge of the overpass, where he was tackled and taken into custody.

Authorities say all four children are safe and unhurt.

Investigators had found a Honda Accord belonging to the family with the body of a dead woman in the trunk about a half-mile from their Montebello home Wednesday. The body has not been identified. An official with the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said no details could be released because the case is on a security hold by the Montebello police.

Detectives had been searching through the early morning hours as relatives pleaded for the four young boys to be safely returned.

Montebello police Lt. Kelly Gordon had said there the children’s father, Daniel Perez, was a person of interest.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert Thursday stating the children were “taken by their biological father.” The alert identified the children as Jordan, 11, Jaiden, 9, Tristin, 8, and Alex, 6.

In a tearful press conference Wednesday night, relatives begged for the children to be brought back.

“You’re breaking our heart,” Pamela Valdez, the children’s aunt, said. “Please don’t hurt the kids, please.”

The family has not been heard from since Friday, and neither adult had been answering their phone. Relatives told police the couple’s marriage was unstable and that there was a history of domestic violence.

Montebello is located about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

  1. Not to defend this guy but how can a biological father abduct his own kids?

F the state and all of its criminal agents. If my sight picture shows a cop pointing a gun at a man standing next to his own children Im leaning towards the agent as the first tango down.

    1. Because they aren’t really his kids. Even the mother might have possession of them but they aren’t hers. Property of the state to do with what they please.

  2. All these Amber Alerts turn out to be custody dramas. The news here should be SDPD doesn’t go wild shooting up vehicle on freeway. Good thing those maniacs don’t have drones (yet) or they would have just hit it with a JDAM.

  3. “The suspect then stepped out of the car and walked toward the edge of the overpass, where he was tackled and taken into custody.”

Why wasn’t he killed in a hail of gunfire?

Why weren’t those pigs “in fear for their (miserable, worthless) lives”?
