Quake Alert: Los Angeles Expecting ‘Big One’ as Helium Leaks From Faultline

The Newport–Inglewood Fault extends for 75 kilometers (47 mi) from Culver City southeast to Newport Beach at which point the fault trends east-southeast into the Pacific OceanYahoo News

When hi-tech movies are then replicated in life – we see it as a positive step forwards.

However, no-one wants to see disaster movies repeated in real-life, but it looks like LA may be on the verge of getting the ‘San Andreas’ treatment.

Geologists from UC Santa Barbara have found helium leaking from the Newport-Inglewood fault in central Los Angeles increasing the potential damage of an earthquake on the mega city.

This discovery comes after the US Geological Survey warned that the city is building up to a ‘big one’ in the next 30 years with chances of a magnitude 8 earthquake hitting the mega-city increasing from 4.7 to 7 per cent.

UC Santa Barbara geologist Jim Boles was reported by MailOnline saying: ‘The results are unexpected for the area, because the LA Basin is different from where most mantle helium anomalies occur.

‘The Newport-Inglewood fault appears to sit on a 30-million-year-old subduction zone, so it is surprising that it maintains a significant pathway through the crust.’

An earthquake registering 8 on the Richter scale will produce major damage to buildings, transport and energy infrastructure…not pretty stuff.

All we need now is a more accurate way to predict these monsters.

  1. “Geologists from UC Santa Barbara have found helium leaking from the Newport-Inglewood fault in central Los Angeles increasing the potential damage of an earthquake on the mega city.”

A 6 or above on this fault will likely kill tens of thousands. I lived right next to it.

    Not anymore.

    1. I’m situated approximately 5 air miles WSW of the Hayward fault in a liquefaction zone, and approximately 18 miles ENE of the San Andreas fault. Smack dab in the middle of a danger zone.

  2. If you believe in a supreme being, “GOD”, and I do, take it to the bank that the quake that is to hit the West Coast will happen between now and the next few years at most. Furthermore, take it to the bank that it will be a magnitude of 12 or above, that the entire West Coast, up to a hundred miles inland will disappear into the ocean, if the many mystics and visionaries, who have warned of such a quake are right. God will not be mocked – take that to the bank also as His patience is about done.
