Rats nest in ATM and eat $17,000 worth of cash

Rampant rodents have raided a bank in India by nesting in an ATM and chewing through thousands of dollars worth of banknotes.

Cash worth more than 1.2m rupees [US$17,000] was destroyed when rats found their way into a bank machine in Tinsukia, Assam.

Authorities from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee published images of the bizarre bank machine invasion this week. The pictures show how scores of bank notes were shredded inside an ATM storage container.

The machine had been out of order for a number of weeks when surprised repair staff made the bizarre discovery, reported the Indian Express.

Assam journalist Nandan Bordoloi posted footage depicting a dead rat being plucked from the wreckage which suggests the rodents may have been trapped in the machine without food.

The incident has provoked an outpouring of reaction online, with many people finding the rat attack amusing.

  1. “Assam journalist Nandan Bordoloi posted footage depicting a dead rat being plucked from the wreckage which suggests the rodents may have been trapped in the machine without food.”

If eating mammon didn’t kill them, nothing would… who knows what the hell’s in that ink they use.

But lack of water will do the job REAL quick.

  2. i know one thing i have seen the damage they can do, even to the point of eating thru Tin! Mom has had Mice on her acrerage for yrs, but this yr a dif kind and geeze Tribes of them! Stories would take to long, but anyone who thinks it is funny should be spanked! 🙂 They are in our garage but we got ride of them i think, but my neighbor cussed cuz they are in his car, and yet has a live trap and lets them loose!!!

      1. DL, chickens eat mice, seen it with my own amazed eyes.

Sticky mouse traps set around house catch mice and scorpions.

  3. Since rats are revered by some Hindus in India (I aw this on a TV show about rats and how to get rid of them in hard to reach places)…there is a temple there where rats are looked upon as holy–then I am not too surprised.
