Newly-released video shows a fight between a Kansas City police officer and a Kansas City firefighter moments before the police officer fatally shot the firefighter.
Anthony Bruno died of his injuries in the shooting outside a downtown hotel on Dec. 1.
Officer Don Hubbard told investigators that if he had not used deadly force in this case, he was afraid Bruno would have killed him.
Hubbard had been off duty on the night of the shooting, working security for the Marriott hotel. He responded to a report of a fight going on between some people and a cab driver.
According to the police report, Bruno was attacking the cab driver in a dispute over a fare, but he ran away when Hubbard arrived. Hubbard chased Bruno through alleyways and caught up with him between 12th and 13th streets and Baltimore Avenue.
The video shows Hubbard attempting to arrest Bruno, pleading with a group of bystanders who had recorded the incident on a cellphone to call for help.
Donna McGuire, The Kansas City Star:
As he lay bleeding on a downtown Kansas City street, newlywed Anthony Bruno mouthed “Don’t let me die” to a bystander who had rolled him on his back to check two gunshot wounds.
On the pavement nearby, Police Officer Donald Hubbard felt himself drifting in and out consciousness. Blood dripped from his broken and battered face. He tried to get up but fell back.
The bystander, who happened to be a critical care nurse in a hospital trauma unit, could not find Bruno’s pulse. She asked Hubbard to apply pressure to Bruno’s wounds while she began chest compressions. Hubbard crawled to her as sirens sounded in the distance, according to documents released Tuesday by police.
Soon, an arriving police officer asked what direction the gunman had fled.
Hubbard looked up.
“I shot him,” he said.
Here is what ya do to a cop. Given the chance just do the three stoodges thing and take your pointer and index finger and poke him right in both eye balls and blind the F`er. and if ya can then load him up and dump the blind pig in the nearest hardest getto – with his uniform on and let the getto people take care of him and then just sit back and enjoy what comes next. That is my suggestions. I`m not encouraging this but it has been one of my fantasies 😉 . See how the blind piggy likes to start sh*t and starts to beg for mercy
At first I thought the officer had acted inappropriately from just reading the headline. But after reading the story about the firefighter beating the crap out of a cab driver, running away, and then viewing the video which shows him fighting the cop and smashing his head on the ground, I’m more upset at the “witnesses” who didn’t step in to stop this from happening in the first place. That firefighter was no small individual, and he was probably intoxicated as well. I believe the cop may have actually just been “doing his job”.
Slug Diamond, it looks to me that when the cop tried to roll that fire fighter over that the pig place a well aimed knee into the guys head to intentionally hurt the guy. Am I right that the cop was the one in uniform and the firefighter was the one in the whit shirt `cause it was the guy in the whit shirt that got his head kneed into the sidewalk wasn`t it.
By the way, if this situation was so out of control then where was the cops tazer. Isn`t that what tazers were mean`t to be used for as a last reasort before useing the cops gun? Guess the cop forgot his tazer at home eh.
Well, yeah, hadn’t thought about the tazer. And yes, the cop kneed the guys head first. But the firefighter was being a drunk dick. Did he deserve to die? Absolutely NOT. So it was bad all around. But like I said, I’m more disappointed in the people just standing there watching. Had some bystanders stepped in at the beginning of this whole situation, none of this would have happened.
If someone would have stepped in to help the cop and got hurt would that person be compensated for his injuries and time missed.
These cops are – from what I have been told – are supposed to be trained in martial arts to be able to take non violent/lethal actions like this. Yea this may be one of the few times that a cop may be justified but I still think that this cop could have shot the guy in the knees or shoulders insteasd of murdering him. I mean just what is that so called accademy training cops to do anyway besides murder and how to get away with it.
Diggerdan, I’m not arguing your point. I suppose excessive force was used. I’m just saying that if people had stopped this guy from being a douchebag and beating up a cab driver to start with, none of this would have happened.
I know Slug Diamond. We have no problems. It just bothers me that cops seem to always get away with murder and other serious crimes every time that would end up anyone else in prison for a long long time ya know. It just bothers me Slug Diamond.
No the cop was off-duty “working security for the Marriott hotel.”
What was he doing chasing the firefighter(FF). The FF was running away to avoid confrontation.
This is another Trayvon Martin. The guy goes looking for a confrontation, gets smacked down and then pulls a gun and kills the one he was chasing/following.
He may have been “scared for his life” but if the FF had taken him down and broken his neck (which is my preference to hurting my fist by punching someone) the FF would have been up on murder charges. He inserts himself into the fray and then shoots someone because he “fears for his life”
What a POS
Oh yes, forgot about that little detail of being off duty. You are quite right, the FF would have gone to jail.
Cops are PUSSIES!!!! 1 on 1 they are PUSSIES!! It always takes 3-4 to subdue anyone, even old ladies. This cop was getting his ass beat and took the cowards way out by shooting this guy. If the cops were beating him and he feared for his life and shot a cop what do you think would happen to him. It is coming America/ United States there are going to be ALOT of dead cops in the streets very soon!!
I wonder how many people fear for their lives every time they even see the police?
