Senate Talks Resume as House Cancels Vote

White House Dossier – by Keith Koffler

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell resumed talks tonight on a compromise to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling, and there seemed to be growing optimism they will reach a deal, possibly Tuesday night.

The talks resumed as Speaker Boehner decided he lacked enough support to pass a proposal that would have raised the debt ceiling until February 7 and fund the government through December 15.

The legislation would have eliminated government assistance to lawmakers, White House officials and their staffs to help them buy insurance on the Obamacare exchanges. Also, Treasury would have been forbidden from using “extraordinary measures” to extend the debt ceiling beyond February 7. Language to end an unpopular tax on medical devices was dropped earlier in the day.

Democrats rejected these measures as too much, while conservatives were in shock that this is all they would get at the end of the battle, giving Boehner little ability to make headway on either side of the aisle.
