Stocks plunge, gold spikes after Trump taunts Russia with missile strikes in Syria

Major US indices opened lower on Wednesday following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East between nuclear superpowers Russia and the US.

The S&P 500, Dow Jones and the Nasdaq Composite were losing almost a percent after US President Donald Trump tweeted a warning to Russia on Wednesday to “get ready” for Syrian missile strikes.

“Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!” Trump said on Twitter.

The president’s threat comes after Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon said on Tuesday that Russia would shoot down American missiles headed Syria’s way.

The message from the US president also wiped out early gains on the European markets with major burses in London, Paris and Frankfurt trading half to one percent lower following the news.

The markets are divided in two ways – a possible US military strike in Syria brings uncertainty, but the ease of trade tensions between the US and China can be regarded as a sign for bulls to open long positions. People’s Bank of China Governor Yi Gang announced the plan to open the world’s second-biggest economy, something that can be regarded by markets as a rapprochement in the trade war with the White House.

Gold rose to its high of the day on the news, trading 0.6 percent higher at $1,353.70 per troy ounce, as investors turned to the bullion, which is regarded as safe haven in times of uncertainty.

Oil prices also surged to a two-week high on rising tensions in the Middle East, with Brent crude trading one percent higher at $71 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate also gained one percent, trading above $66 per barrel.

  1. Hmm….. Trump’s threatening Russia with “smart” missiles over this BS gas attack, even though Russia’s missiles are a bit smarter than ours.

It sounds to me like WW3 has to be started soon so it can be blamed for the rapidly crashing economy.

  2. Never forget that when it comes to war, the official reason is NEVER the real reason. Going to war against Russia is a disaster in the making. If we go to war with Russia, we are going to lose. Period. Their equipment is as good if not better than ours. Their military is not as worn down, over used and over extended as our military is. And many other nations will side with Russia, just to get even with the decades long abuse the USA has done to them. We in the FUSA don’t have the industrial base to replace lost equipment. We are bankrupt, so where is the money going to come from to finance a war with Russia. Nor do we have the QUALIFED and fit citizens for a military to take on the Russians.

Rigged, should be triple that by now. Take a 100.00 to the grocery store and see how it buys jack shit.
