They Live, We Sleep: How the Control of Data Allows an Invisible Government to Rule in Secret

In the prescient and unsettling-but-realistically-surreal alter-reality 1988 cult classic They Live directed by John Carpenter, there are many clues about the real life police state scientific dictatorship we’re all living under today.

Before the pivotal, iconic turning point when Rowdy Roddy Piper first puts on the Hoffman sunglasses and sees the very first subliminal billboard to “Obey,” there is another subtle message for the police state technocracy to come…

The regular billboard – before revealing the hidden message “Obey” – carries an advertisement for a company called “Control Data”  and reads, “We’re creating the transparent computing environment.”

Via Wikipedia: “Control Data Corporation (CDC) was a supercomputer firm. CDC was one of the nine major United States computer companies through most of the 1960s; the others were IBM, Burroughs Corporation, DEC, NCR, General Electric, Honeywell, RCA, and UNIVAC. CDC was well-known and highly regarded throughout the industry at the time.”

During the sixties, CDC created what were considered the fastest computers in the world at the time.

“We’re creating the transparent computing environment…”

What sad irony when considered in the context of a movie where an alien race is using that same “transparent” system to control everyone’s minds through frequency manipulation and subliminal messages.

Control [of] Data, yes?

The relationship between implicit control through a data driven society where “They” know everything of any importance that happens on a “transparent” computer platform and a world where “we” obey is clear enough.

they-live-we-obey

In other words — even aboveboard in a society ultimately controlled by hidden commands to obey, consume, never question authority, and hold no independent thought — there is already a data-driven “controlled” society where “transparent computing” holds promise.

This is basically the society that we have been bathed in since the age of Big Data has dawned.

Total surveillance. Everything tracked, traced and catalogued in metadata libraries that make the Library of Congress look like a magazine rack.

In fact, there’s a new term for this beyond surveillance world of big data we’re all living in:Überveillance.

Überveillance is defined as, “an above and beyond, an exaggerated, an omnipresent 24/7 electronic surveillance. Not only does the term suggest a surveillance that is always on but also surveillance that is always with you, referring to a surveillance technology that is embedded within the human body.”

But the bigger question looms: are today’s masses being literally told through a mass signal of some kind to “Obey” and “Consume” as part of the larger, ubiquitous social engineering program that is admittedly underway?

Are we literally living in They Live?

While it’s hard to prove either way, it is an even harder question to dismiss without lying to one’s self and blatantly ignoring reality.

Even Rowdy Roddy Piper, who played the main character Nada in the film, later Tweeted in 2013 that the movie isn’t fiction but a documentary.

Many people have suggested there is a mass mind control operation underway… How far it goes and who is ultimately in control is perhaps up for debate.

At a minimum — an absolute minimum — it starts with the defining statement of Edwards Bernays’ 1928 book Propaganda.

The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society.”

“Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.”

“This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society.”

“In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons… who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.

In the first two paragraphs of his influential book, Bernays makes stunningly clear that 1) democracy is farce, 2) manipulation by hidden forces are at work behind the scenes, and 3) corporate agendas are steering the decisions and mass social patterns of the population.

Bernays elaborated on the “instruments and techniques” of “molding public opinion” in his earlier volume Crystallizing Public Opinion.

Bernays blatantly calls these hidden forces of manipulation the “invisible government” — and no, he wasn’t exaggerating for effect.

He was speaking to a coordinated machine that was just coming to power in the 20th Century, a machine which has become many times more sophisticated with advanced in technology and, in particular, with the surveillance, collection and analysis of “Big Data” or “metadata.”

Now, as the real smart grid is coming online, as we are surrounded by a cacophony of wireless everything from satellites to cell towers to antennae to cell phones, from smart meters to smart appliances, we are being tracked and traced and databased everywhere we go. We are being swept up into the Internet of Things.

That very first decoded billboard in They Live wasn’t chosen at random or by accident. It was put there as a warning sign of things to come.

Those things are here.

  1. A couple years into my research on the NWO, I bought this movie. I had seen it when it first came out, but the true message was lost on me at the time.

Swap out the aliens for the elite, and you have a reality show here.

    1. One of my all-time favorites now, Ntb.

Unfortunately, I got stupid and loaned it to someone (I never learn), so I have to find another copy.

      1. Amazon.com has it. Saw this when it first came out and immediately bought it on VHS and when it came out on DVD later I bought that. Fantastic Movie!

        1. I rarely buy anything online, have never bought from Amazon. There was a Warehouse right across the parking lot from where I do most of my posting, but it closed a few months ago, and now it’s a Big Five sporting goods store.

There is, however, another store that sells used cds & dvds a few miles down the road. I’ll likely be able to find a copy there. If not, I’ll just order one from them.

It’s one movie I NEVER tire of watching. 🙂

  2. Remember a year or so ago advertising media was experimenting with direct projection of ads into people’s minds on Times Square successfully. If ad agencies can do that, what can the CIA do?

    1. Is there a difference between Ad Agencies and the CIA . . . or CNN . . . or NBC . . . or ABC . . . or Fox? I think it all related. It’s called “manipulation” and “control”.
      . . .

    1. Hey #1, thanks for turning me on to this. I haven’t tried but I don’t suppose it’s available to watch online?

  3. A blatant modern example of “They Live” occurred right after 9/11 when during a speech, “W” told Americans to go shopping and let “them” handle the terrorists. Didn’t think much about it at the time, but hey, I was sleeping’ then. That advice, given by the then-president(CEO) takes on a new meaning after one awakens. Zzzzzz goes America.

  4. I saw this movie when I was 9 years old. That was the day I clearly remember how everything clicked in my head about the reality of this planet.
    . . .

  5. Saw this movie in 1988 when I was a kid after watching “WWF Monday Night Prime” back in the day. They were promoting this because it starred Rowdy Piper and so my brother and I watched it. It was a good movie and I love John Carpenter films, but I never really understood the point of it until the past couple of years. I think I’ll watch it again. 😉

    1. “I saw this movie when I was 9 years old.”
“Saw this movie in 1988 when I was a kid”

I want to thank the both of you for reminding me how F&$%in’ OLD I am.

  6. yes, it is a stunningly poignant film. Lots of points of interest, especially the resistance movement that starts with those who can “see” , battling to break the “aliens” control mechanism that has hood winked everyone.

  7. Great lines from that movie:

“I don’t like nobody following me, unless I know why.” Keith David

“Well, I don’t join up with anybody, until I see where he’s going.” Roddy Piper

  8. Also, an interesting choice of a name for the glasses – Hoffman.

Michael Hoffman is an outstanding revisionist historian. I believe they were named after him.

    This, from Wikipedia:

“Hoffman also states that the gnosis of this ruling cabal is slowly being revealed through movies such as They Live and The Matrix and other forms of symbolic and subliminal communication”

  9. Just got done watching that movie again. Funny how the way to get people to see is by taking out the MSM communications. Just like I’ve always said, the only way we can win is if we takeover the MSM communication airwaves.

With the Internet and the alternative media, more and more people are waking up and seeing through these charlatans and Zionist elites. Their communications network is falling apart as we speak. They are trying to tighten their grip by censoring the Internet and disarming us.

The middle class is gone and all there is left is the poor and the rich upper class. In addition to that, there are always weasels (aka charlatans) who are selling their souls for a bigger piece of the pie and to be in league with the elite, while making others and the poor suffer more.

Roddy Piper was correct. It’s not fiction. It’s a documentary.

    1. I also like the long fight scene between Roddy Piper and Keith David in the alley where Piper’s character is trying to get David’s character to see with the glasses, telling him to “Put them on!”.

It’s symbolic to the fight in our own lives in getting our friends, even our best friends to see. You almost have to wrestle and beat it out of them in order for them to just take one look to see because they don’t want to step out of what they think is their normal lives. The shock is too much for them and they would rather find it easier to just live in denial.

Finally when he puts them on, the world is revealed and there’s no turning back.

Also, the way they portray the glasses as giving headaches and making people fatigue, symbolizes the psychological shock and exhaustion in finding out the truth when more about the real world is revealed to us.

      Great movie.

  10. When I was in College I had to take a course in child development and in that study was a statement found in testing and that was: out of sight out of mind. Move something out of range to a toddler and it fails to exist. It is forgotten very quickly. However, I soon learned it doesn’t only apply to toddlers but to adults too. As long as they don’t have to look at it or face it, it doesn’t exist and that is the problem. Compounding that is when they know it exists, whatever it is they refuse to look again or face it, it is just too painful and so they stop looking and go about their everyday lives, not oblivious just choosing to ignore and hope it goes away.

It is just as painful to me but I found it impossible to ignore the Matrix we live in.

  11. “Many people have suggested there is a mass mind control operation underway… ”

Well if it’s not as obvious as the nose on your goddamn face just try talking to one of the brainwashed idiots. The whole country is one big Moonie camp.

  12. People in the movie got headaches hearing (or seeing) truth.

Sadly, I’ve seen people switch their brain to the off:position because they can’t discuss a topic.

There’s that UNIVAC/CIA connection. Close family members “employer” while working for the 3-letter traitors.
