Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US State for International Organization Affairs Erin Barclay condoned the UN’s “obsession with Israel” during an address she delivered to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday.
Barclay asserted that the council’s “obsession with Israel” comprised the “largest threat” to the “council’s credibility.”
“The United States will oppose any effort to delegitimize or isolate Israel,” she said, calling the council “unfair” and “unbalanced” with “unfounded bias.”
On Saturday, reports surfaced that the Trump administration could potentially withdraw the United States from the United Nation’s Human Rights Council over the body’s believed bias against Israel, Politico reported.
According to two sources in frequent contact with US officials, Politico reported that the administration under US president Donald Trump finds the council to be anti-Israel, while allowing for the inclusion of governments known for perpetual human rights abuses.
Several countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iran hold chairs on the 47-member council and are known to be frequent offenders of human rights, however, Israel has been condemned more times than any other country.
Under Obama, Israel-US ties hit new lows when the US abstained from vetoing a resolution passed by the UN Security Council to condemn the building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, an atypical move from the United States.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism for the new Trump administration, whose members have outwardly stood in favor of Israel on many issues, including the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
