A government shutdown could suspend food stamps for 46 million Americans

Business Insider – by Mary Clare Jalonick, Associated Press

A government shutdown Oct. 1 could immediately suspend or delay food stamp payments to some of the 46 million Americans who receive the food aid.

The Agriculture Department said Tuesday that it will stop providing benefits “within the first several days of October” if Congress does not pass legislation to keep government agencies open. Democratic lawmakers said USDA does not have enough money in reserve to pay a full month’s benefits and a partial government shutdown would affect recipients in states that pay out their benefits at the first of the month.

Congressional Republicans are trying to avert a government shutdown next week when the budget year ends. A temporary funding bill to keep agencies operating has been complicated by a battle over funding for abortion provider Planned Parenthood.

  1. …and plenty of people still think a welfare state is a good idea. When the food supply is controlled in the form of measured handouts with strings attached (i.e. support the selling of aborted baby parts if you want to EAT!!!), it can vanish in an instant (or at least within a day or two) and then what?

  2. …A government shutdown could suspend food stamps for 46 million Americans….

This has been the plan all along.
Get people dependent, then pull the rug out from under them…..
    46 million Americans….

    1. no ones fault but the 46 million………… they should ban together and arrest lawmakers…………..they have destroyed the working free market economy

      1. it’s also a slow game, played out over time. I believe this is on purpose. Generations pass, with nothing done, milestones happen in people’s lives, they “age out” of problems, passing to the next generation. Older people remember how things used to be! But the younger ones do not. That is the way it is done (to us). Discredit the older ones’ wisdom, indoctrinate the newer generation. Allow time to pass and people to forget. Erase history. Attack on several fronts at once. Point fingers at false enemies to divide people and divert from where the true enemy lies.

Soon there will be no one left to remember what a “working free market economy” feels like.

  3. The EBT will never be shut down. I stand behind people using it when I shop. Most, do not look and shop as if they have any worries.

    1. tumcat,
Those using EBT are foreigners in the majority. The American nationals living in the tent cities and in the storm drains aren’t getting the big huge amounts. Depending on the state, they get about $130 to $150 per month in food and nothing in cash. You’ll never see the real thieves in this country because they shop in places that wouldn’t let you in the door.
Some day the reality is going to be realized. Make no mistake, we are being robbed, and it’s not by poor American nationals, it is by rich foreigners. 95 cents of every welfare dollar goes to the corporation administering the funds.
That being said, and considering what you see, think about what is left for the people who truly deserve the help.

Were that to be coupled with/followed by a ‘bank holiday’ on Friday, it would be a ‘disaster’ epic proportions.

    Stay awake.
