Alabama lawmaker introduces sex offender castration bill

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — An Alabama lawmaker has a plan to permanently and physically punish someone convicted of certain sex offenses against children.

The bill, known as HB 365, would make those sex offenders have to get surgically castrated before they leave prison.

HB 365 was introduced by State Representative Steve Hurst, R-Calhoun County.

He said the bill will be for sex offenders over the age of 21 that committed sex offenses against children 12 years old and younger.

“They have marked this child for life and the punishment should fit the crime,” said Hurst.

This is not Hurst’s first time introducing the bill.

“I had people call me in the past when I introduced it and said don’t you think this is inhumane? I asked them what’s more inhumane than when you take a little infant child, and you sexually molest that infant child when the child cannot defend themselves or get away, and they have to go through all the things they have to go through. If you want to talk about inhumane–that’s inhumane,” said Hurst.

Hurst is hoping this would make sex offenders think twice.

“If we do something of this nature it would deter something like this happening again in Alabama and maybe reduce the numbers,” said Hurst.

Residents have some mixed emotions about it.

“Somebody that wants to mess with a little girl or little boy that age should be castrated, and they should not be able to mess with any other kids,” said Keith Dison.

“I understand prison and going to prison for a long time for some kind of crime like that, but to physical mutilate someone…that’s a little out there…it’s crazy,” Jessica George said.

The bill will have to pass the judiciary committee before it’s heard by the Alabama House and Senate.

      1. Yeah, gettin’ your nuts cut off from a false allegation would suck. We could just lay them on an anvil and get the BFH out! Either way, it appears, not even your balls are your own!

  1. As much as I loathe and detest paedophiles and sexual predators, the combination of false accusations, wrongful convictions, and the backlash of WHO is going to be given this “authority” outweighs my hatred for the real predators. Power like this put into the hands of an infiltrated corrupt “government” such as ours could never end well. Leave it to the victims and victim’s families IF they have been convinced of the accused’s guilt.

    1. Perfectly put, Martist.

That’s my only objection to capital punishment too; it’s too often used on people later found to be innocent, and it can be used as a tool to silence political enemies by framing them.

Castration is a bit too drastic a decision for any court to make in my opinion, unless the pervert is a repeat offender, convicted more than once beyond a reasonable doubt.

    2. Martist said exactly what I was thinking about this castration thing but he articulated it far better than I could have.
This so called law would only be for the peasantry, the rich and politicians will continue to rape and kill children at will.

  2. if this goes through no man in DC will have any balls … oh, sorry , thats the case already

I don’t think anyone would deny that it’s inhumane. The question is, are we going to allow the government to adopt barbaric methods of dealing with terrible crimes?

The Eighth Amendment of the Bill of Rights (which Hurst is apparently unfamiliar with) forbids doing so, and for good reason: it’s just another way of giving government more power than it can be trusted with. Today, they want to cut the balls off of pedophiles; tomorrow, they’ll be cutting out the tongues of anyone convicted of “hate speech.” It’s just like the way the Patriot Act is initially aimed at “terrorism” but is now used to bust people for things like drugs and gambling.

Others here have also made good points about the danger of irreversible punishments in a corrupt system that frequently convicts innocent people.

So, what should be done with pedophiles? In my opinion, they should simply be kept in prison. A life sentence seems appropriate enough for an adult who sexually assaults a child.

Killing someone raping your wife is justifiable homicide. I would have to believe the same goes for your kids, as well. The problem is catching them in the act, to justify killing them.

Anyone that depraved has no place in the general population.
