Assad support growing ahead of pres. election

Popular support for the incumbent Syrian government is increasing in the run-up to the country’s presidential election, a political analyst tells Press TV.

“The Syrian government has broad support, even greater support than was the case perhaps a year or two ago in light of all that has happened,” said Mark Weber, a director of the Institute for Historical Review from California, in a Tuesday interview.

The Syrian nation is concerned that in the absence of the government of President Bashar al-Assad, the “very divided, fractious and fanatic” militants would take power, the analyst added.

Weber pointed to the UN’s criticism of Syria’s planned election and noted that the international body favors a transition in Syria which will be in line with the interests of the US and its allies.

Syria announced it will hold a presidential election on June 3. Parliament speaker, Mohammad al-Lahham, announced the date in parliament, saying Syrians living outside the country would vote on May 28 and candidates would be able to register from Tuesday until May 1.

The United Nations condemned the announcement, warning it would torpedo a political resolution of the conflict. Syria’s foreign-backed opposition also rejected the election as nothing more than a “farce.”

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. Over 150,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by Western-backed militants.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

And how can they be sure those votes outside the country will be accurate and be sent in accordingly?

So am I reading this right? The UN would rather continue killing more innocent people rather than find a way to end it peacefully with a political resolution? Whatever happened to their humanitarianism propaganda? Only when it works for them, I guess.

yes, that is their agenda, and they will not let common sense stop their tyranny and bloodshed
