AT&T agreed Sunday to buy DirecTV for about $48.5 billion in yet another mammoth deal in the pay-TV space this year that would immediately boost the telecom giant’s customer base at a time of confounding industry challenges.

The merger, which both boards approved Sunday, is the latest evidence of TV-industry consolidation, one born of telecommunications companies’ desire to amass customers and control content and delivery. The United States government is set to file charges against government officials in China for allegedly hacking U.S. business interests, marking the first time ever that the U.S. government has formally accused another nation of using the Internet to break into U.S. businesses and gain unfair economic advantage, ABC News has learned.

The move carries enormous diplomatic implications, as the Justice Department and FBI are expected to announce charges today against several Chinese officials, according to sources. A federal judge Thursday upheld registration requirements that are part of the gun laws in the nation’s capital, approving of measures that make owners take a gun safety class, be photographed and fingerprinted and re-register their weapons every three years.

The city put the requirements in place after a landmark 2008 Supreme Court decision that ended a 32-year-old handgun ban in the District of Columbia. The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted in favor of advancing a proposal that could dramatically reshape the way consumers experience the Internet, opening the possibility of Internet service providers charging Web sites for higher-quality delivery of their content to American consumers.

Harris County Commissioners hired Texas’ premiere appraisal expert to investigate whether Harris County Appraisal District is fairly assessing home owners and commercial properties.  Harris County Commissioners noticed a disturbing pattern of deep discounts in commercial properties they were purchasing at condemnation for right-of-way (or roads).  There was a perception that the assessed value set by Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD) was often only 35 to 65% of the purchase price when they were purchasing commercial property.  They hired appraisal expert Ted Whitmer to determine the market value of a number of large commercial properties in Harris County.   Continue reading “Harris County Commissioners Investigate HCAD”

A ruptured oil pipe near the city of Glendale, Los Angeles County, has caused a massive leak as 50,000 gallons of crude oil spilled onto streets, which is knee high in some places, the Los Angeles Fire Department reports.

The leak from a 20-inch pipe was first reported at around 12:15 am local time. The oil line was remotely shut off, the Los Angles Fire Department (LAFD) said in a press release. The oil spill has covered approximately a half-mile area, and is knee deep in some spots. The leak, which was sprung near 5175 W.
