As more details continue to surface, the NYPD’s activities are beginning to make the NSA’s surveillance programs look like the paragon of restraint. We’ve already detailed how the NYPD (with help from a former CIA official) placed entire mosques under surveillance and infiltrated the Occupy movement.
Having effectively neutered the Handschu guidelines in 2003 (which placed severe restrictions on monitoring political activity), the NYPD was free to surveill all sorts of non-criminal, politically-focused gatherings. A Nanuet man said last year that he was “anxious to start killing various public officials” was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in federal prison.
Lawrence Mulqueen has already served around 8 months of the sentence, having been incarcerated since his arrest in February, when prosecutors said that he wrote on his Facebook page that he wanted “all followers of President Barack Obama dead,” calling them “traitor scum” and declaring “death to them all.” Continue reading “Lawrence Mulqueen gets 15 months after making threats against public officials”

NASHUA – When Shannon “Bear” Cothran was threatened by a knife-wielding robber on Monday morning, he didn’t think twice about what to do.
Cothran, who was working after midnight at the Shell gas station at 301 Main St. in Nashua, pulled out his Ruger LCP .380 handgun.

At 6 AM, the sky outside my apartment is still purple-black. It’s too early. I stagger out of bed and stand under a scalding jet of water in the shower, trying to remember where I’ve been, where I am, and where I need to be. Oklahoma. Austin. Houston. In less than eight hours I have to climb a stage and tell a roomful of strangers my story. As far as stories go, it’s pretty interesting, I guess. It’s got thrills, heartbreak, what technically counts as crime, and even a little bit of vindication. But telling it wears me out. Living through it was more than enough. Giffords and husband Mark Kelly, a former combat pilot and astronaut, are scheduled to be with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman at the Saratoga Springs Arms Fair on Sunday to highlight a voluntary agreement and stricter state gun control law. LOS ANGELES — LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles police officer was charged with assault Thursday for allegedly kicking a woman seven times in the groin, abdomen and upper thigh during an arrest in which the woman ultimately died, her attorney said.

COLVILLE, Wash. — COLVILLE, Wash. (AP) — An 11-year-old boy was convicted Friday of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in a fifth-grade plot that targeted a female classmate.
Stevens County Superior Court Judge Allen Nielsen said Friday that “simple anger” fueled the plot the boy hatched earlier this year with a 10-year-old classmate at Fort Colville Elementary school in northeast Washington.
