VENONA AND THE COLD WAR

The Venona Project began because Carter Clarke did not trust Joseph Stalin. Colonel Clarke was chief of the U.S. Army’s Special Branch, part of the War Department’s Military Intelligence Division, and in 1943 its officers heard vague rumors of secret German-Soviet peace negotiations. With the vivid example of the August 1939 Nazi-Soviet Pact in mind, Clarke feared that a separate peace between Moscow and Berlin would allow Nazi Germany to concentrate its formidable war machine against the United States and Great Britain. Clarke thought he had a way to find out whether such negotiations were under way.   Continue reading “Venona – Decoding Soviet Espionage in America”

The Intercept – by David Dayen

The California Supreme Court on Thursday ruled unanimously in favor of a fraudulently foreclosed-upon homeowner in a case that should serve as a wake-up call to state and federal prosecutors that mortgage companies continue to use false documents to evict homeowners on a daily basis.

“A homeowner who has been foreclosed on by one with no right to do so has suffered an injurious invasion of his or her legal rights at the foreclosing entity’s hands,” the justices wrote.   Continue reading “Siding With Foreclosure Victim, California Court Exposes Law Enforcement Failure”

Wilson ‘Connie’ Edwards, a stunt pilot from the film Battle of Britain, kept a mind-blowing wartime collection in his barn in Texas for 40 years.

Among those aircraft were six Hispano Aviación HA-1112 ‘Buchons’, a Spanish-built version of the Luftwaffe’s feared Messerschmitt Bf 109, and a rare Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX, all of which were used in the filming of the 1969Battle of Britain movie. It seemed appropriate, therefore, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the epic climax of the Battle of Britain, to take a look at that unique collection in more detail, writes Urban Ghosts.   Continue reading “Mind-blowing! This could be the cleanest and most sustainable way to heat a conventional home. Some people have reported that they heat their home with nothing more than the dead branches that fall off the trees in their yard. And they burn so clean, that a lot of sneaky people are using them illegally, in cities, without detection.

When somebody first told me about rocket mass heaters, none of it made sense. The fire burns sideways? No smoke? If a conventional wood stove is 75% efficient, doesn’t that mean the most wood you could possibly save is something like 25%? How do you have a big hole right over the fire and not have the house fill with smoke? I was skeptical.   Continue reading “Rocket stove mass heater”

Kitco – by Peter Hug

Earlier today I was asked why I wasn’t aggressive at the $1,182 level. The short answer: I have no faith in the Fed. The market was vulnerable to any nonsense spewed by the Fed, particularly a hawkish tone, which would have accelerated the pull-back and possibly damaged the support line. So, Yellen in her ultimate wisdom waffled.

The bullish leg up to $1,192 came as Yellen indicated concerns about weak oil and global financial issues. Then, in her next breath she said this was all transitory and the Fed’s inflation target of 2% would be met sooner rather than later.   Continue reading “Gold Back Above $1,200 As Fed Chair Yellen Waffles In First Day Of Testimony”

Oregon Catalyst – by John A. Charles, Jr.

The State of Oregon will sell 84,000 acres of the Elliott State Forest by March 2017, in order to make money for public schools.

However, the lands will not be auctioned to the highest bidder. In fact, they will not be auctioned at all. The State will set the price based on appraisals, and purchasers will pay that price.   Continue reading “Not One Dollar More”

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is asking the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the layoff and replacement of IT workers at a state energy utility.

Approximately 200 IT workers at Northeast Utilities (now called Eversource Energy) lost their jobs in 2014. It happened after the firm brought in two India-based IT services firms. Some of the IT workers reported training foreign replacements. The IT firms, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, are major users of H-1B visa workers.   Continue reading “Sen. I learned how to prepare medicinal pickled garlic from my grandmother who was always ready to treat us with her self-made remedies. Garlic helps treating sore throats, colds, flu, poor digestion and is a potent antiseptic and antimicrobial agent effective against many types of infection. Above all, it really helps your immune system. Garlic contains allicin, an antibiotic and anti-fungal compound that protects it (the garlic) against pests.  Continue reading “How To Prepare Medicinal Pickled Garlic”
