The negotiations this week in Geneva between Iran and the “P5+1” (the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — plus Germany) offer a promising vehicle for avoiding another destructive war. The talks came on the heels of a virtual uprising by the American people that stopped President Barack Obama’s plan to attack Syria, clearly demonstrating their desire to solve conflicts at the negotiation table rather than at the point of a gun.

NSA director Keith Alexander and his top deputy will depart soon, according to reports from Reuters and other news agencies that first broke yesterday afternoon.  John Inglis will retire at the end of the year, and Alexander will follow his deputy out the door by spring 2014:

Outdoor air pollution has been definitively linked to cancer and is officially classified as a carcinogen, according to research released Thursday by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell resumed talks tonight on a compromise to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling, and there seemed to be growing optimism they will reach a deal, possibly Tuesday night.

The U.S. Senate responded decisively today to Secretary of State John Kerry’s recent signature on the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). In a bipartisan letter led by Senators Jerry Moran (R–KS) and Joe Manchin (D–WV), half of the Senate has officially pledged to oppose the ratification of the ATT. The signatories include every Republican Senator except Mark Kirk (R–IL) and five Democratic Senators. A Pennsylvania man called cops last night to report that his Strawberry-flavored Jell-O snack was stolen from the break room refrigerator at his workplace.
