We are Cove Point – by Margaret Flowers
For decades, there has been a mostly dormant liquefied gas (LNG) import facility in the community of Cove Point on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland. Surrounded by forest on conservation land and across the street from residential homes and neighborhoods, the huge white storage tanks are only visible from the opening at the plant’s entrance. It used to be that locals hardly gave the facility a thought. The area is known for its Calvert Cliffs, where 12-million-year-old fossils from the Miocene Era are plentiful, for its historic light house, beaches, fishing and boating, and for the usual activities of community life. A friend reports hearing a sweet elderly lady in the pew next to him saying a prayer.
It was so innocent and sincere that I just had to share it with you:
“Dear Lord: The last four or five years have been very tough. You have taken my favorite actor – Paul Newman; my favorite actress – Elizabeth Taylor; my favorite singer – Andy Williams; my favorite author -Tom Clancy; and now, my favorite comedians – Robin Williams and Joan Rivers. There is no doubt that almonds were once one of the healthiest foods on Earth; there are many health benefits of almonds. But before you buy almonds today, here is something you should know: most of the almonds sold in the U.S. have been fumigated with propylene oxide, a chemical that even the CDC has admitted causes cancer.
In 2007, it became illegal for raw almonds to be sold in the U.S. What brought about this law was an outbreak of Salmonella in Canada that was traced back to an almond grower in California. The California Department of Health Services stepped in to help this grower increase the safety of his almonds, and that appeared to be the end of it. Lucid Energy, a Portland-based energy company, has come up with a brilliant idea to harness electricity from the water that flows through a city’s pipes. Small turbines are installed into the pipes which send the energy collected from the flowing water into a power generator.
“It’s pretty rare to find a new source of energy where there’s no environmental impact. But this is inside a pipe, so no fish or endangered species are impacted. That’s what’s exciting,” Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy, said in a statement. Continue reading “Portland Just Installed Water Pipes That Generate Electricity”

The U.S. is slowing down its withdrawal from Afghanistan, despite long-held promises that the military would be out of the country by 2016, new Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said on Saturday.
Carter told reporters in Kabul that the Obama administration is “rethinking” its counter-terrorism mission in Afghanistan and that the U.S. military wants to ensure that “progress sticks” in the country after its withdrawal. In his first trip to Afghanistan since being sworn in as Pentagon chief, Carter said a new plan could change the original schedule, which would have seen the U.S. halving its troops this year and establishing a “normal” embassy presence by 2016. In a year beginning with the notorious February military coup in Ukraine, also known as the Euromaidan revolution, the Ukrainian economy has come to the brink of default.
It has turned out that a $27 billion bailout, offered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and multinational creditors to Kiev, will not be enough to bolster the anemic Ukrainian economy as well. However, new loans, requested by Kiev to keep its economy afloat will only exacerbate the situation, experts say, pointing to the fact that Ukraine, saddled with heavy debts, will not be able to pay them off in the forthcoming decades. Have you ever wondered why some people swear by herbs and have outstanding results, but you simply didn’t realize any or very little benefit when you tried those herbs? It could be that you weren’t actually taking herbs but something quite different. If there is a conspiracy, it’s designed to scam the consumer.
A 2013 Canadian study conducted by the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario uncovered the scamming practices of some herbal supplement manufacturers. These companies mixed herbs with various fillers that diminished the traditional medicinal benefits of the herbs (1). Continue reading “Is there an Herbal Supplemental Conspiracy?”

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives and Senate are differing on how to fund the Department of Homeland Security as deadlines loom before the department would shut down.
House Speaker John Boehner said in an interview on Feb. 15 that he is “certainly” willing to let funding for the DHS to expire, based on his Republican colleagues’ desires to see President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration be stopped. Republicans in the House want to tie the agency’s funding to the dismantling of the president’s executive action.
