REUTERS DO NOT REUSERaw Story – by Daniel Wallis

DENVER (Reuters) – At the Native Roots Apothecary, a discreet marijuana shop in a grand old building in Denver’s busy 16th street shopping mall, business is so brisk that customers are given a number before taking a seat to wait their turn.

There are young men in ball caps, nervous-looking professionals in suits, and the frail and elderly. Staff say customers have been flocking to their outlets since Colorado voted to allow recreational pot use for adults from January.   Continue reading “Six months after marijuana legalization: Colorado tax revenue skyrockets as crime falls”

The Extinction Protocol

July 2014 – NORTH CAROLINA – More than 22,000 Americans were without power at the start of the July 4th holiday after Hurricane Arthur scythed through North Carolina’s Outer Banks early Friday. Thousands more had already fled in preparation for the Category 2 storm, which has seen maximum sustained wind speeds of 100 miles per hour, lashings of rain and a storm surge of up to five feet. Arthur is not only the first hurricane this season, but also the first to hit the United States since Sandy caused $70 billion damage across New Jersey and New York in October 2012.   Continue reading “Hurricane Arthur makes East Coast landfall, 22,000 without power”

California’s drought is intensifying, turning more farms to dust, fanning fires, draining fountains and driving “unbelievable” prices at water auctions.

A map released by the US Drought Monitor on Thursday classified nearly 80% of California as in “extreme” drought, the second highest of five categories. Within that area an estimated 36% is “exceptional” drought, the highest category.   Continue reading “California severe drought intensifying as Napa wildfire rages on”

Qualcomm announced today that it will acquire 60GHz WiFi company Wilocity and incorporate the design firm’s products into its own SoC lineup. Wilocity has demonstrated 60GHz WiFi before and previously partnered with manufacturers like Dell to create a line of WiGig chipsets. Some of you may recall the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) for short — Wilocity uses the term “WiGig” to refer to its product performance but is not affiliated with that group.   Continue reading “Qualcomm to boost wireless performance to gigabit levels with Wilocity acquisition”
