WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — Neighbors of two Wisconsin girls accused of stabbing a friend nearly to death say they’re struggling to reconcile the allegations with what they know about the 12-year-olds and their upbringings.

Waukesha County prosecutors have charged the two girls in adult court with attempted homicide for allegedly stabbing a girl the same age in the woods. The girls told detectives they conspired for months to kill the other girl in hopes of pleasing Slenderman, a fictional character they read about on a horror website.   Continue reading “Neighbors: Stabbing at odds with girls’ upbringing”

A humungous Earth-like planet found by US astronomers has changed the perception of planet formation. A rocky world found by Kepler space observatory should by rights have become a giant ball of gas, but has remained a planet for billions of years.

The newly discovered Kepler-10c planet has been dubbed ‘Mega-Earth’ thanks to its diameter of 29,000 kilometers and an estimated weight 17 times greater than Earth, which has a diameter of 12,742 kilometers. This makes Kepler-10c the biggest rocky planet ever discovered.    Continue reading “‘The Godzilla of Earths!’ New planet weighing 17 times greater than Earth discovered”

A new analysis suggests that more fatalities than originally reported may have resulted from faulty ignition switches used by General Motors in millions of cars sold during the last decade.

GM has gone on the record to acknowledge that 13 deaths have occurred as a result of the flawed switches, which the manufacturer knew for years were prone to abruptly cause affected automobiles to shut down, seizing the vehicles’ power steering, power brakes and airbag deployment mechanism as a result.   Continue reading “Dozens of additional deaths linked to GM cars with faulty switches”

Organ replication took a leap at a Boston hospital, as doctors finally nailed the process of artificial vascularization with the use of advances in 3D bio printing together with biomaterials in order to create the first synthetic blood vessels.

Although huge strides have already been made in replicating all sorts of human tissue and organs, making delicate conduits from scratch was still some way off from reality. Now, by approaching the problem in a complex way involving several layers, vessels were engineered in a fashion conducive to the health of the blood vessel cells, which makes for more long-lasting vessels.   Continue reading “‘Critical challenge’: Doctors can now 3D-print blood vessels”

A short time ago, in a galaxy very, very close by, a NASA satellite thought it detected a gamma ray burst in Andromeda. It was a false alarm, but astronomers used the opportunity as a reminder that our galaxy and Andromeda are set for a head-on collision.

NASA’s Swift satellite discovers and measures gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe, and their afterglow in X-ray, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths of light. The space agency says the spacecraft is designed “with powerful telescopes and quick reflexes to capture gamma-ray bursts as they flash and leave a lingering afterglow.”   Continue reading “Milky Way, Andromeda galaxies set to collide in giant game of space bumper cars”
