Blumenauer introduces bill that would force occupiers to pay cost of Oregon standoff

WASHINGTON — Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Portland) on Wednesday introduced a bill that would prevent taxpayers from paying the high cost of the month-long Oregon refuge occupation and place the burden on the armed group of protesters.

The occupation has cost state and local law enforcement an estimated $100,000 per week, said Blumenauer’s spokeswoman in a news release.

The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice to quickly reimburse law enforcement for the costs, and then allow the U.S. Attorney General to bring a civil suit against the occupiers to recover the government’s cost.

“When we talk in trillions here in Washington D.C., maybe talk of $100,000 here or a million dollars there doesn’t sound like very much, but to the state of Oregon, it matters, Blumenauer said on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. “For this small community, a few hundred thousand dollars has a significant impact on the local taxpayer. They shouldn’t be made to pay the bill.”

“We should recover damages from law breakers who tear up the landscape, degrade wildlife habitat and destroy property,” Blumenauer said. “This legislation would allow the federal government to go back to recover its cost from people who willfully inflict this damage.”

The refuge occupation has been going on since the armed group took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 2. Bundy and other leaders were arrested, but four protesters remain.

  1. Oregon has a tried and true method of raising money. It’s called Property Zoning. The state needs funds, they send their goons out to haul property owners into court for fines. I know from first hand experience.

  2. The article says it’s costing state and local law enforcement $100,000/week.
Yet the bill introduced would allow the federal government to recover federal costs? Via the DOJ and US Attorney General?
How does that help the local and state residents?
It sounds to me like more federal law enforcement intrusion into state and local law enforcement. The Feds will sue. Pay off the “right’ local and state people and end up controlling the land even more. In other words, blatantly doing what they’ve been doing all along.
The Feds should be sents home by the locals. Then costs would be minimal.
They should never have been there in the first place.
This was a complete set up by the DOJ/FBI as a federal BLM/DOFW land grab under the guise of “environmentalism”.
With this bill, they can just bankrupt anybody they want to get their privately owned land.
They won’t need to burn them out (looks bad on video) or gradually deny grazing rights.
I’m for the DOJ/FBI to spend their time money and resources on the financial criminals. Bankers, Wall Street, Hedge funds, etc.
That will do a whole lot better for every American taxpayer.
