Washington Governor Jay Inslee is activating the Washington National Guard ahead of election day, according to KING 5, and neighboring state Oregon isn’t far behind.
The action by the governor follows two recent ballot box arsons in Portland and Vancouver, Washington, in late October, which destroyed hundreds of ballots. Officials are still seeking a suspect.
Governor Inslee announced that some National Guard members will assist local law enforcement and the State Patrol, with the exact number yet to be decided.
Homeland Security has warned of potential political violence and threats to election infrastructure ahead of the 2024 General Election. Guard members will be on standby from Monday through Thursday night.

Despite global conflicts reaching their highest levels since World War II—currently at 56—the public’s sense of safety has improved over the past decade. This rise in perceived safety is largely attributed to greater trust in law enforcement, which remains a key factor in how secure people feel, regardless of a country’s economic standing.

Washington state Governor Jay Inslee (D) has ordered the activation of the state’s National Guard in the case of civil unrest over the 2024 general election. The governor cited the recent ballot box bombings in the Pacific Northwest and a report from the Department of Homeland Security warning that threats to election infrastructure remain high. A squeezed global aluminum supply chain has sent the price of the metal’s critical ingredient, alumina, to the brink of a new record high on Wednseday of $707.59 a ton, nearly eclipsing the 2018 high of $707.75.
Since the mid-point of the year, supply chain snarls and production disruptions in major alumina-exporting countries have sparked shortages.
