In 2006 when Michael and I went to Cannes, France in 2006, we rented a very nice medium-sized Citroen van which took diesel and did 60 miles to the gallon. We were very surprised to find that this kind of car was so readily available, and would have loved to have taken it back with us. (We later learned, when you visit Europe, ask for a small car. We were given a “free upgrade” at the time, not realizing that the knowing ones all want small cars. Parking spaces are so small that you are much more likely to end up with a big scratch on the car, from other drivers, as we did. A pending proposal from President Obama to create a vast new wilderness area on the U.S.-Mexico border is drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers and local law enforcement officials who say it would significantly impede border security.

The Obama administration is set to designate a 600,000 acre national monument in south-central New Mexico to be managed and controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, a federal agency. Swiss bank Credit Suisse pleaded guilty Monday to the charge that it facilitated wealthy Americans who sought to commit tax evasion, becoming the first major bank to admit criminal wrongdoing in over 20 years and agreeing to pay $2.6 billion in fines.

The settlement announcement Monday included an acknowledgement from bank officials that they knowingly and intentionally helped thousands of US citizens put their money into offshore accounts, allowing them to hide financial assets from the US Internal Revenue Service. Talia Maselli reached out to Biden last fall, knowing his dance card likely would fill up. Biden sent a handwritten card and a corsage — baby’s breath, white roses and red, white and blue ribbons. TOKYO May 19 (Reuters) – Japanese utility Tohoku Electric Power Co said on Monday it would buy more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the U.S. Cameron project, increasing its purchase to 570,000 tonnes per year, using U.S. Henry Hub natural gas-linked prices.

WASHINGTON — The European Union is pressing the Obama administration to expand U.S. fracking, offshore oil drilling and natural gas exploration under the terms of a secret negotiation text obtained by The Huffington Post.

The controversial document is an early draft of energy policies that EU negotiators hope to see adopted under the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) trade deal, which is currently being negotiated. The text was shared with American officials in September.
