Israel has conducted airstrikes on the Lebanese capital of Beirut for the first time since the ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect back in November.

Friday’s attack began with a threat and a warning, with the Israeli army telling people to evacuate parts of the southern Beirut suburb of Hadath. Middle East correspondents report a “heavy bombardment” of Beirut, as clearly the ceasefire is effectively dead.

Washington state sheriff has taken a firm stand against a proposed bill that would permit noncitizens to become law enforcement officers, granting them the ability to take away the constitutional rights of US citizens. Keith Swank, the Sheriff of Pierce County, urged state lawmakers to reject the legislation, asserting on Wednesday that noncitizens should never be allowed to hold such positions of power. The sheriff made it clear that if the bill were to pass, his office would reject all applicants who are not American citizens.
