Former “American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken may run for Congress in his native North Carolina.
The 35-year-old singer is in discussions with some Democratic insiders in Washington about making a bid for seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, sources told the Washington Blade.
Aiken would be running to represent the 2nd Congressional District currently filled by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.). Republican Frank Roche has filed paperwork to challenge Ellmers in the May 6 primary.
Aiken has reportedly met with reps from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, pollsters at the Hart Research Associates and operatives in Raleigh to gauge their response, unnamed sources told the Blade.
None of the organizations reportedly consulting with the singer would go on record to confirm Aiken’s political ambition.
Candidates must file their campaign paperwork by Feb. 28.
The Southerner reached stardom on the second season of the Fox singing competition in 2003.
Though he took second place, behind Ruben Studdard, he has released six albums and starred on Broadway in “Spamalot” from 2008 to 2009.
In September 2008, he revealed he was gay and has become an activist in the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender community, most notably supporting anti-bullying legislation.
He has also served as an ambassador for UNICEF since 2004.
