The Doubs river flows normally in Franche-Comté, France. But since about a week or so, the river has totally dried up over a length of more than 1 km, between Pontarlier and Morteau, although precipitation has been abundant this winter and spring. The river has disappeared, and with it, the fauna and flora. Everything is dead. Two weeks ago, 13km of the Risle River in Normandy also disappeared underground in a large crater. According to geologists, this unprecedented event is due to large cracks and craters in the riverbed.   Continue reading “Two French rivers disappear underground in large cracks and sinkholes: The Doubs River (Franche-Comté) and the Risle (Normandy)”

A Florida judge recently proclaimed her right to decide what a newspaper publishes amid the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s decision to publish a redacted report on Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the Parkland school shooting in February.

The outlet obtained a redacted version of the report documents from the school district detailing what school officials knew about him in the years leading up to the attack.  The report, however, was mostly redacted pursuant to a court order, but reporters discovered that by copying and pasting it into a different document, they could see the entirety of its contents. It decided to publish in a move Broward County circuit judge Judge Elizabeth Scherer called “shameful.”   Continue reading “A Judge Is Trying to Censor Parkland School’s Treatment of Nikolas Cruz: Here Are the Documents”

San Bernardino, CA — Once again, a cop’s fear of a dog has put others in harm’s way, and, once again, an innocent person was hurt. This time, an 11-year-old boy was struck by a police officer’s bullet when the officer was attempting to kill his dog.

This week, a deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was responding to a call over a possible disturbance at a home. When the deputy knocked on the door, the 11-year-old boy answered and—like most dogs in the world do when they hear a knock at the door—his pup ran out.   Continue reading “While Trying to Kill a Family’s Dog, Cop Shoots 11-year-old Boy Instead”

A federal judge on Friday approved a plan to reunite hundreds more families who were separated by border officials after they entered the United States from Mexico.

The plan negotiated by the U.S. government and immigrant rights advocates marked the second stage of federal efforts to reunite 2,551 children ages 5 to 17 with their parents.

These families had been separated under President Donald Trump’s now-abandoned “zero tolerance” policy toward illegal immigrants.   Continue reading “U.S. judge approves plan to reunite separated immigrant families”

UN human rights experts have slammed the Japanese government for the alleged exploitation of “tens of thousands” of workers, as well as migrants and the homeless, said to be cleaning up the mangled Fukushima nuclear plant.

In a three-way joint statement, released Thursday via the United Nations, the human rights experts detailed their deep concern over the “possible exploitation by deception regarding the risks of exposure to radiation, possible coercion into accepting hazardous working conditions because of economic hardships, and the adequacy of training and protective measures” following the 2011 disaster.   Continue reading “Homeless & migrant workers ‘exploited’ to clean up Fukushima radiation, UN warns”

San Onofre, CA — A nuclear power plant in Southern California that was shut down in 2012 continues to leak radioactive material and poses a threat to nearby communities.

The aging San Onofre, located in San Clemente, CA, was shut down in 2012 amid a leak that occurred due to malpractice. According to a report released in 2016, the plant “operated the reactor outside the allowable limits for pressure and temperature, causing the radiation leak that shut down the facility for good,” the San Diego Tribune noted. The shutdown also launched extensive investigations that implicated both the power company and state regulators.   Continue reading “Defunct Nuclear Power Plant on California Coast Is a ‘Fukushima Waiting to Happen’”
