A Denton police officer was in critical condition after getting shot during a traffic stop Tuesday morning, police said.
The officer, who has not been identified, was described as “critical but stable” by Denton Assistant Police Chief Bobby Smith during an early morning news conference.
The officer was taken to Medical City Hospital in Denton and was undergoing surgery, Smith said.
Two people have been detained in the incident, which occurred just after midnight in the 1800 block of West University Drive after police conducted a traffic stop for a “vehicle equipment violation,” police said.
Shots were fired during the traffic stop, and one of the officers was hit, police said.
The vehicle then fled, where it was intercepted by Carrollton and Farmers Branch police officers, who followed it during a slow-speed chase that ended at a convenience store at Valley View Lane and Luna Road.
The driver and a passenger were detained and hospitalized with gunshot wounds, Smith said.
The Texas Rangers are investigating, along with the Denton police Major Crimes Unit.
I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the people in that car fired in self-defense rather than be beaten and/or killed over a burned out tail light. I have no sympathy for gestapo thugs that fleece the people for mammon all in the name of victimless crimes.
“The officer, who has not been identified, was described as “critical but stable”…”
