Deputies Respond to Active Shooter at Umpqua Community College

Update: NBC News

A gunman was in custody after he killed seven to 10 people and injured about 20 others Thursday at a community college in southwest Oregon, authorities said.

It wasn’t immediately known whether the gunman was dead or alive as authorities said simply that he was in custody after the shootings at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, which was called in at 10:38 a.m. (1:38 p.m. ET), officials said.

Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg said it was treating nine patients, with three more expected. Sacred Heart General Hospital in Eugene, a major trauma center, told NBC News it was expecting three patients by helicopter.

Students and faculty were being bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Umpqua student Larry Howell was on his way to class when he saw students running around him, he told NBC News.

“I turned around. I heard ‘active shooter,’ and I didn’t need to be told twice,” he said.

Howell said he checked in with his friends to make sure they were safe.

“Everybody is reaching out to one another and checking on everyone. We don’t know which one of our colleagues are down,” he said.

Umpqua is a two-year school with about 3,300 full-time students and 16,000 part-time students. It started offering classes in 1961.

  1. I have been following the situation in Syria all morning and literally just found out about this shooting a few minutes ago. I checked Twitter, and it looks like they have someone in custody. Will be watching for updates…

        1. Wonder how many homeowners had their mortgages paid off today in Roseburg. Will the school be torn down and hauled away by this time next month?

  2. Home school=less targets, ban backpacks=less time searching um fishing for whatever. No more gun free zones.

      1. How many of the grown up students there at commie college have their own joint and don’t live with mom and dad? I still say there children, most without a clue.

  3. Why do most of the medics have red tee-shirts on? Is it casual thursday or is there some significance to those particular people? Are they part of something the others aren’t?

  4. Well now that we’ve read the news, does anyone know if this actually happened?

I only know what’s going to happen next, and NO, we don’t need any new gun laws.

    1. Anyone that believes any of these “shootings” are really happening, needs to check their gullibility index. COMPLETE AND TOTAL BS HOAXES.

  5. If this scenario turns out to be bloodless and aseptic like Sandy Hoax or fake-blooded and staged with obvious actors like the Boston affair, I say bullshite.

Show the actual untouched scenes of the dead, and fully report all the names of the “victims”, including the real funerals with real distraught family members, or shut up and go home.

  6. Here it comes: more screeching about the need for “common sense gun safety laws.”

Pass any laws you want, MFers. You’re not getting my guns — especially not with the US turning into one of the worst police states in history. You think I’m going leave my life and my rights to the tender mercies of idiot-faced SWAT thugs?

  7. Just another diversion tactic since Russia is bombing the sh! t out of ISIS. Plus the shooter was suffering from reefer madness since Oregon just passed that new weed law effective today. Typical slight of hand magic trick…like Lance Burton in Vegas. Let’s see asking religious affiliation ? The shooter must have been a syrian muslim russian white christian. Jeez…. can’t they stop shooting up school’s and go to the house and senate in
