Ebola kills 208 people in Guinea: WHO

A new report by the World Health Organization (WHO) says at least 208 people have died from the highly contagious Ebola virus in Guinea.

The UN health agency said on Wednesday it has registered 328 confirmed or suspected cases of Ebola, including 208 deaths, in the West African country.

The WHO added that the figure includes 21 deaths only between May 29 and June 1. This makes Guinea one of the worst-ever places hit by the outbreak of the deadly fever.

The organization warned that the virus has also growingly affected neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone, despite claims by Guinean officials that they have stopped it from spreading to other regions.

The virus has so far claimed the lives of nine people in Liberia and six in Sierra Leone.

There is currently no known cure for Ebola, whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding.

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood, feces or sweat. It can also be spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.

Discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976, Ebola remains one of the world’s most virulent diseases that kills between 25 to 90 percent of those who fall sick.
