Escape Room opens in Plattsburgh

My NBC 5 – by Liz Strzepa

There’s a new place to test your problem solving skills in Plattsburgh.

The Escape Room 60 is officially open at the Champlain Centre Mall.

The way it works? Teams of four to eight people are put in a themed room.

The only way to get out is to work together to find hints, clues, solve puzzles and more all in 60 minutes or less.

There’s a moderator watching your every move.

Teams are able to get four clues within their escape attempt. If they need one, all they have to do is ask and the moderator will provide one.

So far, the owners say it’s been a popular attraction.

“Our puzzles are actually designed in a very unique way where it takes more than one person to solve a puzzle. So players have to be team players to make it out. It’s funny to watch a game because as (the players) go through the games and solve things something eventually clicks and they realize they have to communicate well in order to escape,” said co-owner Sarah Snyder.

This is the second Escape Room 60 location owned by the Snyder family.

They also have a Williston, Vermont, location which has been open for more than a year.

“We’ve had people come over (to Vermont) from Plattsburgh asking for us to build one (in New York),” Snyder said.

The Plattsburgh location opened just before Thanksgiving.

The space also features a virtual reality ride.

Participants sit in an egg-shaped chair which features surround sound. They’re asked to put on goggles before they’re transported to a new world where they’ll be able to look around and feel their new surroundings.

The virtual reality experiences last about three minutes.

As for the escape rooms, there are currently two experiences at the Plattsburgh location.

Participants can choose to escape from “Taken,” a story line that pins the players as victims of a kidnapping forced to break free by solving puzzles and codes. The second experience is called “Pirate Plunder,” where players are trapped in an underground lair on their search for buried treasure. They have to break free before the tide rises.

This spring, the owners will be releasing two new experiences: “Upstate Prison Break,” based on the 2015 Dannemora escape, and “Area 51.”

  1. Why have fun or turn on your mind in reality when you can do so in “virtual reality”? Give me reality any day…and, if I want virtual reality, I’ll just write a novel…
